Star Trek Into Darkness preview hits this December

One of the most anticipated genre films of 2013 is Star Trek Into Darkness.

This is the long awaited follow up to JJ Abrams’s reinvention of the classic franchise, and along with The Dark Knight Rises, it’s hard to think of a recent genre film that’s been under more secrecy. It’s also hard to think of a genre film that’s going to be under more geek scrutiny than the next Trek.

Well on December 14, the veil is going to be lifted, and a total of 9 glorious minutes of the film are going to be previewed in Imax 3D on 500 screens. Yes, December 14 is the same day The Hobbit hits the theaters, and as the Hollywood Reporter confirms, it will indeed be playing before The Hobbit in Imax screenings, which should absolutely be geek nirvana.

You may recall that The Dark Knight Rises previewed a chunk of footage like this on Imax in advance as well, and we may finally find out who Star Trek’s villain is. They could leave the villain out to frustrate audiences, but I’d have a hard time thinking Paramount would do that to us, unless the secrecy paranoia is really out of hand these days.

You may also recall JJ Abrams revealed literally three frames of new Trek footage on Conan as a goof, and the joke if you blinked you missed it comes to mind, and in this case it was pretty much true. Still, there were plenty of screen grabs from one of those frames all over the ‘Net.

As Greg Foster, the chairman and president of Imax, told Deadline, “Our longtime partners JJ Abrams, Bryan Burk and the Bad Robot team have really hit it out of the park – the footage is absolutely incredible. Their use of the Imax camera and canvas is sure to impress current and future Star Trek fans alike, and we’re thrilled once again work with our friends at Paramount Pictures to offer this extended ‘first look’ at this highly anticipated summer blockbuster.”
