Man of Steel converted to 3D

While I couldn’t recall hearing or reading anything about the new Superman flick, Man of Steel, being up for a 3D conversion, it makes sense the movie would be on the fast track for 3D treatment.

It’s DC’s big daddy franchise along with Batman, and it’s hopefully going to be the big superhero reboot next summer.

So the news indeed hit that Man of Steel will be converted to 3D, and again, it’s not a surprise. As we’ve reported previously on TG, China won’t play a big American film unless it’s in 3D, and even with a blockbuster that’s destined to make big bucks, the foreign market these days is crucial for a movie that costs a ton of money to make their money back.

As the Hollywood Reporter pointed out, Christopher Nolan, who is producing Man of Steel, is famously against 3D. Although Warner Brothers put pressure on him to make The Dark Knight Rises in 3D, Nolan adamantly refused. Guillermo Del Toro also publically denounced doing his upcoming sci-fi epic, Pacific Rim, in 3D, but he now has accepted it and is (at least publically) behind it.

On the other hand, Zack Snyder, who directed Man of Steel, has worked with 3D on Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga-Hoole, and is apparently all for Superman being in the format. Like many 3D conversions, there will be select showings of Man of Steel in the format, as well as IMAX screenings of the film.

As Snyder said in a statement, “The film is going to be a visually exciting experience in all formats: 2D, 3D and IMAX. Anticipating how audiences today embrace 3D, we designed and photographed the movie in a way that would allow Man of Steel to captivate those movie goers, while respecting fans who prefer a more traditional cinematic experience. We’ve taken great measure to ensure the film and the story come first, and 3D is meant as an enhancement.”

We’ll find out next year for sure it this is indeed the case when Man of Steel comes out on June 14, 2013.
