TRON: Uprising sneak peek changes sides

Disney XD has released a new sneak peek for its upcoming animated adventure serial TRON: Uprising.

The new video clues us in on some of the subplots of the show and clarifies a number of the characters. The voice over, read by Bruce Boxleitner, summarizes the main plot for us.

The story of Uprising falls between TRON and TRON: Legacy.

It tells the story of Beck, a program who believes The Grid is in need of new leadership.

When he finds the previously defeated Tron, the pair team up to bring down the nefarious General Tesler. From this new trailer it seem that Beck will not just be secretly training with Tron, but will also fight the bad guys, and possibly lead the revolution as Tron.

The challenge for this show will be the same as faced by any midquel, namely, the need to continue one story while explaining another. A difficult feat, to be sure, but if Uprising can pull off stories half as good as the similarly structured and themed Star Wars: Clone Wars, we’ll be in for a treat.

The more I learn and see about this show the more I’m looking forward to it. It really looks like Disney knows what it is doing here, so the series may end up more compelling than even the recent TRON: Legacy.

The official synopsis is thus:

Produced by Disney Television Animation, the series follows Beck, a young program who becomes the unlikely leader of a revolution inside the computer world of The Grid. His mission is to free his home and friends from the reign of the villainous Clu and his henchman General Tesler. Beck will be trained by Tron – the greatest warrior the Grid has ever known. Tron will not only teach Beck the fighting skills he needs to challenge this brutal military occupation, but will be a guide and mentor to him as he grows beyond his youthful, impulsive nature into a courageous, powerful leader. Destined to become the new protector of the system, Beck adopts Tron’s persona and becomes the archenemy of Tesler and his oppressive forces.

TRON: Uprising, which stars the voices of Elijah Wood, Bruce Boxleitner, Paul Rubens, and Mandy Moore premieres June 2012 on Disney XD.
