Jack the Giant Killer goes medieval

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have debuted the first full-length trailer for Jack the Giant Killer, a film based – very loosely – on the classic Jack and the Beanstalk fairytale.

The film looks mostly like an excuse to use cool special effects, but if the movie has much more of what we see in the trailer, effects lovers are definitely in for a treat.

Personally, I wouldn’t expect more than a token plot, and perhaps a romantic side-plot (there does seem to be a princess involved after all), but it looks like a lot more fun than I was imagining when it was first announced.

The trailer also arrives with this new synopsis:

“The film tells the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack, into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom, its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend—and gets the chance to become a legend himself.”

Jack the Giant Killer, which stars Nicholas Hoult, Stanley Tucci, Ian McShane, Bill Nighy, Eleanor Tomlinson and Ewan McGregor is slated to hit theaters June 15, 2012.
