Will Fassbender be the new RoboCop?

During a recent interview, Michael Fassbender was asked if he would be interested in playing the role of RoboCop in the upcoming reboot of the classic sci-fi film.

As you may recall, Jose Padilla, the director of the new reboot, mentioned that he wanted Fassbender,  star of the recent X-Men: First Class (and half a dozen other films which have not yet been released), to play the lead role.

“You know, I’m always open. I’ll take a look at the script and sit down with the director and have a conversation,” Fassbender told Collider.

“It’s not definitely like, ‘Oh, I’ve got to play RoboCop before I retire.’ I don’t have that about anything. I don’t go, ‘I have to play the Dane one day, or Hamlet.’ I don’t really think like that. I just wait and see what comes up, and I’m always open to it. If I react to the script, then I’m up for anything.”

Fassbender may not be particularly excited about the role, but fans should be.

The actor has more than provenn his ability to play the stoic yet internally conflicted semi-hero, and if he can bring that to RoboCop, we’ll have that much better remake on our hands. Truthfully, I can think of few actors who would handle the role better in Hollywood today.

When asked about the need to a robot suit for most of the film, he responded similarly.

“It could be kind of fun,” he said. “It could be kind of good to have a helmet that I could hide behind, for most of the film, too. That sounds kind of appealing.”

RoboCop will likely start shooting next spring or summer, but production and release dates have yet to be announced.
