Syfy changes its mind about Eureka

This past weekend, we discussed a rumor about Eureka being renewed for a super short 6th season, and speculated it would likely be the end of the show.

New information indicates the rumor was indeed true - but with a catch.

An official cancellation notice for the series came with no specific name attached, only this information:

"After painstaking consideration, we have had to make the difficult business decision to not order a season six of Eureka. But Eureka is not over yet. There is a new holiday episode this December and 12 stellar episodes set to debut next year, marking its fifth season and six memorable years on Syfy.

"The 2012 episodes are some of the best we’ve seen, and will bring this great series to a satisfying end. We are very grateful to Bruce Miller and Jaime Paglia, their team of incredible writers, and an amazing cast and crew who have consistently delivered a series we continue to be very proud of. We thank the fans for their support of this show and know they will enjoy its final season in 2012.”

So the upcoming season - which begins airing in the spring of 2012 - will be the last 13 episodes of the series.

Unfortunately, since writing is already complete on season 5, and production has begun, it may be too late for the writers to pen a satisfactory ending.

However, we’re not sure what stage of production the series is actually in, so perhaps the producers can still call an emergency rewrite/reshoot of the final episodes. I certainly hope so, as it would be a definite shame to have one more fun sci-fi show end without true resolution for the show’s many sub-plots.
