In a just released trailer, we’re getting our first look at the new comedy horror based on the Italian comicbook series, "Dylan Dog."
From the press release:“Dylan dog: Dead of Night” is a new horror/comedy film based on one of the world’s most popular comics (60 million copies worldwide). Brandon Routh stars as Dylan Dog, world famous private investigator specializing in affairs of the undead. His PI business card reads “No Pulse? No Problem.”
Armed with an edgy wit and carrying an arsenal of silver and wood-tipped bullets, Dylan must track down a dangerous artifact before a war ensues between his werewolf, vampire and zombie clients living undercover in the monster-infested backstreets of New Orleans.
In the long-running, ongoing comicbooks Dog is a Nightmare Investigator, an official title which designates him as a detective who is allowed access to the world of monsters and mythological creatures.
Missing from the trailer is Dog’s assistant, Groucho, a strange and half-funny Groucho Marx impersonator, who got stuck in his character years ago. His comic-relief role, seemingly, has been filled with a fresh zombie, who’s still getting his undead bearings.
Other changes from the original seem to be a focus on specifically the "undead" rather than all monsters, although they include werewolves under the undead heading (a pet peeve). They’ve also moved the story from London to New Orleans.
All the changes to the adaptation seem to be focused on making Dylan Dog a bit darker visually, while relieving some of the darkness thematically, which makes sense, as that is what audiences are currently expecting from the genre.
Also, from the trailer it seem like it’s going to be full of lighter humor (rather than the black, surreal humor of the comic), especially zombie jokes, and plenty of gore and other disturbing visuals for those who are into that sort of thing.
In other words: It looks like it’s going to be good fun, as long as we don’t try to take it too seriously. If Dylan Dog is your favorite comicbook, you probably shouldn’t watch it.
