Washington (DC) - The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has given IBM a $120 million contract to run the federal government's Digital TV coupon program.
The federal government is scheduled in January to begin issuing $40 coupons for converter boxes to help consumers prepare for the transition to Digital TV.
The converter boxes will be needed on February 17, 2009 when the nation switches from analog to Digital TV. Analog sets that are not connected to subscription TV services will not be able to display the new digital signals at that time without the converter boxes.
