Blu-ray/HD DVD demand to rely on game/consumer applications

  • In response to Japan-based market research firm BOC saying that global demand for Blu-ray Disc (BD) and/or HD DVD, optical disc drives (ODDs)/players will quickly grow to 47 million units in 2008 and further to 100 million in 2010, leading Taiwan-based makers of ODDs indicated that the promotion of Blu-ray Disc (BD) and HD DVD will rely more on game consoles, including the PlayStation 3 (PS3) and Xbox 360, and consumer applications such as recorders/players than on PC-use devices.According to statistics from BOC, only three million blue-laser ODDs and recorders/players were sold worldwide in 2006, two million units of which were installed in PS3 game consoles.
