Redmond (WA) - An MP3 corruption issue in Windows 7 beta Build 7000 that was downloaded by countless millions last week has now been distributed via Automatic Update. The patch, KB961367, was available soon after the beta release but required a manual Windows Update to receive.


The MP3 corruption issue would permanently delete several seconds at the beginning of each MP3 file, replacing them with silence, if the MP3 meta data was edited and was 16KB or larger (which is very large and atypical). As a result, many users were not affected by this issue, though Microsoft was quick to release the patch.

Microsoft addressed other issues with the patch, including Protected tuning source issues, MHEG (iTV), series recording may fail if Vista upgrade and additional Windows Medial Player issues.

In general, the response by TG Daily readers to Windows 7 has been that it's a desirable upgrade. Of the comments posted on recent articles at TG Daily (also here and here), it seems that Windows 7 is proving itself to be the Vista Vista should've been in the first place.

The patch

Unfortunately the patch also conflicted with the Monitor INF I downloaded as an Optional Update through Windows Update. Unfortunately, the same INF driver is still available through Windows Update. Dell 24-inch Ultrasharp owners beware!

i don't believe the guys at tgdaily.com any operating system that even attempts to modify the end-user's mp3 files stinks. just another hidden attempt at sophisticated DRM.. DON'T UPGRADE. DON'T BUY OR DOWNLOAD ANYTHING Microsoft. I love how Microsoft sends Windows Updates and secretly installs DRM on your system breaking programs and files that you legitimately own! F-them.

Linux can't do everything Windows can just like Windows can't do everything Linux can. Get over yourself and your elitist religion. Get some standards together and win some market share.

Get over it. Linux CAN NOT do everything Windows can do, much less do it all better. Linux can't play all the games that Windows can. It can't run all the software that Windows can. Media players in Linux are inferior and you can't watch DVD movies without a potentially illegal codec. Installing programs that aren't available through Synaptic is a nightmare most of the time. Linux is nice. It has its place, but while it may be adequate for a user who only surfs the web, emails, and types, it's woefully inadequate for a gamer and piss poor if you are running a media center PC. I run it on an old laptop, but I can't do ANY kind of gaming because the Linux drivers for my S3 K Twister video card don't support any 3D.

Lots of tech web sites hyping 7 just like they did before Vista's release. DON'T buy the B.S.! I installed 7 on a test computer and reformatted it within a day... it sucked. Maybe it will be an improvement over Vista but I still no reason to "UPGRADE???" from XP. Call me crazy but I need Microsoft to PROVE I need there latest & greatest.

Again, the Redmond Juggernaut foists a POS (that's NOT Point Of Sale...) on the public and immediately starts blanketing the world with patches. No one on earth but this company can make the crap they do and spend all of their resources trying to fix what should not have been broken in the first place. everyone knows that linux can be as powerful or better most of the time its just the deployment of linux is not user friendly enough to entice anyone to use it. just to play games on linux i have to install wine which is quite the headache if you dont know what your doing. the ease and simplicity is what most people are looking for. thats why mac OSX does so well.

Linux is great if you want to find 50 other open source programs to patch together what Windows and OSX give you out of the box. Plus, let's be honest, the interface looks like it belongs in circa 1995 and with so many flavors the community is disjointed with no true shared experience past the kernel. Linux has it's place, but it's not as a market leading desktop OS _at this point_. The usage numbers back that up.

I don't see Linux properly work with Steam games. fact is, there's just too much diversity in Linux versions, requiring users to always either compile or look for binaries. with an OS like Windows, everybody has the same basic kernel version allowing for out of the box usage of software, unlike Linux where you have to wrestle your way through dependencies, have to compile them all and the program you wanted. and then there's hardware support, very few manufacturers make drivers(/ kernel modules) for Linux just because the linux users don't represent a significant enough percentage of the market for the manufacturers to do the extra work. but Alas, I'm glad for once it isn't a mac fanboy to be the first to act like an ass in a Windows related newspost.

Pete, can you play World of Warcraft on Linux. No. That would mean 11.5 million people won't be running Linux but instead running Windows. I agree the free part is nice but application developers go where the greatest number of users are. I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Both Os'es need updating. Granted Linux is more responsive in updating, it still has quirks. As for Windows 7, I've heard good things about it, but the one thing that I've heard is that it has finally caught up to OS X. Not bad, but poor if the Leopard update proves to have a lot of new, unannounced additions.
