Las Vegas (NV) - Yesterday at CES, it was announced that TV stations in 22 major cities will soon begin broadcasting their signal for free in formats designed for mobile devices, including cell phones, MP3 players, multi-function GPS units and in-car entertainment systems, providing local news, weather and traffic updates wherever you are.


No official word has been given on when the service will start, or what type of devices will be able to receive it. In fact, there is some question about the broadcast format. However, broadcasters are eager to begin this free service. The TV stations in 22 major cities account for 35% of U.S. households.

According to Mark Aitken, director of advanced technology for The Sinclar Broadcasting Group, "As with other launches of new broadcasting services, there's a 'chicken-and-egg' conundrum. Without devices, there is no one to broadcast to. [But,] broadcasters have come together and said 'We'll be the chicken. We'll put services out there without devices.'"

On a side note, I see one important question now finally put to rest: Which came first? The chicken or the egg? According to Aitken, it was the chicken. A-ha!

Don't they already broadcast their signals for free? When did you have to start paying to receive TV on a mobile device?
