Las Vegas (NV) - Skype, an eBay subsidiary, announced today that a version of its Internet calling and IM software is available for Google's Android cell phone as a free download. They also indicated an iPhone version of Skype is not far behind.


Such an application may be limited to WiFi, however, as Apple has limited connections over the cellular network for VoiP applications. This may also be changing soon, however, as Apple has recently allowed iTunes purchases to be downloaded over cellular networks.

You can already make skype calls with the Fring application. It also works with other Voip services. So, I don't know why this is such big news..

I dont think att will ever let any VoIP client out on the iPhone. That would just mess with their side of the business.

...is already possible. Get Fring from the Apps Store, them get VoIP3G from Cydia (must jailbreak first of course) then enjoy making skype calls over 3G on your iPhone. Skype out works as well...

Real Skype App

There needs to be a dedicated Skype app for the iPhone, that integrates with the phone so you can make and receive calls without having the app open.
