Las Vegas (NV) - Instant photography, aka, the old days of shaking those old chemical-bath photos which popped out of Polaroids, even though the shaking did nothing for the development time, took many steps forward last year when Polaroid introduced its Instant Mobile Printer. Now, they've gone a step further with this year's CES debut of the new PoGo Instant Digital Camera, priced around $200. In functionality we're back to the old days, but we're not doing it old school anymore.


The Polaroid PoGo Instant Digital Camera is the first portable digital camera and instant printer combination available in the United States and Europe, according to Polaroid. Digital photo takers get for their money a full-featured digital camera loaded with 2x3-inch, sticky-backed photos which are inkless.

The process works by users browsing the captured digital images on the PoGo, choosing the ones they want to print, allowing multiple instant copies to be produced from the same image. The images can be cropped and edited and then printed in less than a minute, directly from the camera, with or without fun borders. The images are printed onto Zink Photo Paper from Zink Imaging. This paper, instead of ink, uses embedded, heat-activated dye crystals to become immediately dry to the touch.

Features of this new instant camera from Polaroid include a three-inch color display, measurements of 4.7-inches wide by 3-inches tall and a weight of around 10 ounces. It will be available at retail in March.

So...wallet photos I guess. I wonder what the resolution of the pics will be if they are intended to be print on something slightly smaller than a credit card. Would have been nice to see a 4x6 model, like the kind we used to get from that film stuff when getting them exposed at our local retailer or grocer back in the day.

What's the point?

What size LCD does the camera have? I have one that already shows me a 2x3 image (3.5" LCD is ~2x3"). It works great to instantly show people what the picture looks like. They always ask me to email the image to them anyway and that can be done almost instantly (at least as soon as I'm back home). Maybe instead of a gimmicky printer they should have just put a 5" LCD on the back so you can show people a larger picture. Of course, they wouldn't be able to sell special paper that way. But, I don't think this is going to last the year.

It is totally retro. Old idea with new technology. http://www.zink.com I will che...arately. Since the paper is heated to form the images, would sunlight cause the image to fade/black out? I remember thermal paper that was used in cash registers and would totally go black with heat or sunlight hit it. How would the image stay after it is printed?

Saw this on CNN. I was thinking like ... wow, it's so big it's embarrassing to pull it out of your bag.... sorry, it's too big to put out of your pocket or pants. Why don't their company just go away. It's embarrassing to work there.
