Las Vegas (NV) - Today at CES, Hewlett Packard (HP) announced they will be debuting a netbook PC capable of running 8 full hours on a single battery charge.

HP claims that by using a premium six-cell “all day” battery, combined with an Intel Atom processor, their new Mini 2140 (successor to the 2133 Mini-Note system) will be able to last up to 8 hours before you need to run to an outlet for assistance. The approach is similar to Apple's recently announced 17" Macbook Pro with a larger battery and eight hours of use, and may indicate an industry trend.

If one makes the decision to opt for a more conventional three-cell battery, the PC will hold power for about four hours - which is twice as long as the 2133’s battery last currently. This long-use ability would give the company a leg up on their competition.

The battery life boost has been attributed to the use of the 1.6GHz Atom N270, rather than the 1.2GHz Via C7-M processor, and the ability of the 2140 to better dissipate heat.

The market for this product would be the business user.

Currently the netbook market is booming as consumers are seeking low prices and portability. However, the majority of these types of PCs don’t meet user expectations.

The life of the HP battery has not yet been tested, but if rumors are true, HP sales could soon spike thrusting HP into the forefront of the netbook business - which is currently dominated by Acer and Asutek Computer Inc.

During the third quarter of 2008, HP came in third in netbook sales, behind Acer and Asus.
