It's about time, and a bit late to really express what I think about this. It should have been done long ago.

Yes, it should be done long ago. So should LCD/Plasma TVs, so we wouldn't spend money on useless CRT TV/monitors. I think they should have invented the GeForce GTX280 in the early 90s.
Be serious, if it was launched now it's because it got ready for mass production now.

They've tried stuff like this a few times. In each case I wasn't convinced it was something worth buying. I hope they have this on display at best buy, etc... later so we can see if it's any good before buying it.

They better add AMD/ATI GPU support. They *are* the best in their market at the moment (plus, I wouldn't touch anything nVidia with a ten foot pole).

Soon enough, 3D gaming will be realistic and viable. But it isn't now, unless you have plenty of money to burn.
This technique uses different polarization for each frame displayed on the screen, one polarized for your right eye, and one for your left (hence the need for glasses). For it to work properly, you need a 120Hz TV (because each eye only gets half the refreshes, therefore 60Hz each, any lower and you would get eyestrain quite quickly). As a result, for this technology to work correctly you need a screen capable of 120Hz or higher refresh rate, which is why in the demo they are using a rear projection TV, as many LCD's cannot do 120Hz, let alone do it properly. This will mean that the technology will be expensive, as only relatively expensive rear projection screens and LCD's support this. Plus you have the inconvenience of the special glasses, plus the special hardware required for it to operate correctly.

There are alternative methods which will also be demonstrated at CES, which do not require glasses or proprietary hardware tied into a single vendor. These are the ones to watch... (no pun intended)

I've been following this technology since they first started showing it off last year at their Nvision event. I like the idea, and think the price tag sounds reasonable but have one question that I can never seem to get an answer to:

This is a big deal for me. I know that the recommended experience would be on one of the new, high refresh rate, displays. I understand why Nvidia has waited for their release before bringing these glasses to market. However, I'm also familiar with the problems these glasses have at lower refresh rates.

It's very much like the way some people are especially susceptible to eye strain when using a CRT monitor at 60hz. Some people develop headaches very quickly under those conditions and the same can happen when using shutter glasses on monitors that can’t output 120hz . The thing is, I've never had that problem. Also, I had bought a new 28" monitor just before the announced the tech and, while I consider $200 reasonable for the glasses, have no intention of spending close to $1000 for a smaller display just for this feature (even if I thought I could afford it).

So, if you read the comments on you articles and are still at CES, I would greatly appreciate it if you could ask a Nvidia rep in the know what the deal is. I certainly hope that they haven’t decided that they know what’s best for everyone or that they are hoping to force people to upgrade to their business partners’ products. There is too much of a price difference here for that to be anything but a roadblock to this technologies adoption.

Its very ironic that this is being touted as a new product, I own 3D glasses that produce the stereoscopic effect on most games through the use of stereoscopic 3D glasses.

This isn't new technology. Making it work on LCD monitors is new though.

My glasses only work on CRT monitors, and only work on Nvidia graphics cards as well.

I did hack them to work with ATI graphics card as well, it wasn't hard.

do the games need to be programmed to utilize this hardware, or will it work on existing games?

Nvidia has been releasing stereovision drivers since at least 2004, and you can play any 3D game with the drivers, an nvidia video card, 2 monitors and a pair of glasses you can buy from many vendors.

Most games require a lot of messing around to work properly, even then there's problems, and some games dont work at all.

You can also use a Head Mounted Display (HMD) instead of 2 monitors for the whole VR thing. I did this with Half Life 2 about 4 years ago.

For at least the last 10 years the entertainment and games industries have intentionally avoided stepping in to this market. It would destroy existing sales of monitors and TV sets. Now everyone has the latest monitor and huge flatscreen, and now sales are collapsing *finally* it's time for something new. About time.

Noticed the article didnt actually say how the 3d is generated. Some of the comments said that its by polarization, which sounds nifty, but I didnt realise that LCD's could control the output polarization...

The alternative to doubling the refresh rate (which is really not easy on an LCD) is to double the resolution. So half or your pixels show one polarization while the other half shows the other. I reckon it'll be much easier halving your pixel size rather than doubling your refresh rate.

This is not the same technology as your old LCD shutter glasses from the Geforce 3 days and Quake 3. It probably works on a somewhat similar principle, but these glasses take into account the position of the wearer's head in relation to the display to generate perspective. Unless I remember incorrectly, your old glasses do not.

I would imagine it uses a send/receive positional IR light like Johnny Lee's wiimote hack. (Which is amazing, btw, if you haven't seen it.)
