Las Vegas (NV) - Samsung is showing off at the Consumer Electronics Show this week four new HD camcorders, including a flagship model offering a 64GB SSD for video storage. Dubbed HMX-H106, it will be available in April, with the other three showing up in March.


The HMX-H106 is the first camcorder to feature an internal 64GB SSD. This makes the camcorder lighter weight and video storage less prone to failure as solid state drives lack moving parts like traditional hard drives. Two of the other new models – the HMX-H105 and HMX-H104, feature 32GB and 16GB SSDs, respectively.

Other features of these new HD camcorders include built-in H.264 compression for longer recording times, a Schneider Kreuznach Varioplan HD lens with 10x optical zoom for better quality images, image stabilization, HDMI connection to display recorded video content directly on HDTVs, and a built-in 2.7-inch LCD touch screen for controlling on-board functions.

No pricing information was available.

are we still stuck with 1080i?

or are we finally up the the real HD standards of at least 720P?

you would even not notice the difference with 1080I and 1080P [High action scenes are noticeable as the interlacing becomes somewhat visible on large enough displays. In my opinion, 98% of the time 720p would significantly outperform 1080i in visual tests. And 1080p is absolutely useless for anything except the largest TVs that aren't too far away from your eyes. -Rick]

Rick is right on this one (720p)

My friend has a 106" projection screen that he runs at 720p. Even at 106" 720p looks beautiful, if you get up close you can see very minute pixelization. 1080i doesn't look as good on that screen. I have a 1080p TV but this quest for it really doesn't make a lot of sense unless your tv is 65" IMO, plus the sources are so limited. A few games and BD is about the only things that outputs 1080p still. DTV hasn't even release a single move in it even though the added support for it back in November. Obviously if your planing on buying new you might as well spring for it, but if you have a 720p/1080i tv I wouldn't bother upgrading just to get 1080p just yet.
