because Wiisports is shipped with EVERY Wii console. So it technically SHOULDN'T be the best selling game of all time because you don't buy it.

This is another reminder on what most articles about big statistics have like 5-50% of inaccurasy rates.

Super Mario Bros was shipped with every NES, at least in North America, so most people didn't "buy" it either.

That's not the best selling, that's the most units, for it to be the best selling it needs to actually be sold, like the original Mario.

You buy the console, and the game is included. How are you "technically" not buying it? Last time I checked, the Wii system isn't free.

Didn't most people get their copy of Super Mario Bros with their NES? I know I did.

It should be most widely owned game, not sold, as cabose369 said, as it is shipped with every Wii console.

The indicates or implies that ppl went out & bought it optionally, or of their own choice...chances are if the wii weren't bundled with this game it would've only sell half that... but then again the audience for the wii like these type of games & may have bought the wii specifically to play it. The previous nes leader supermario was also with a system hence the sales record...technically super mario bros & Duckhunt are tiedfor 2nd, since they were bundled on the same cartridge.
by comparison if sony bundled any game with the ps2, that game would be the best selling of all time with apr 124 mill units sold. For me the real best selling game would be the highest ranked game that was not bundled with any system as a forced sale, but sold based on desire ithink it is GT auto 4... not sure

I think the different between the NES being shipped with Super Mario Bro's and the Wii being shipped wih with Wii Sports is that not EVERY NES console came with it, where as EVERY Wii console does come with Wii Sports. The other difference is that SMB came out a few months after the NES console, so all of the early buyers of NES' would have gone out and bought a copy themself, where as Wii Sports came out when the Wii itself came out.

I find it quite surprising that GTA4 that was out for the ps3 and the xbox360 couldn't sell more copies than wii consoles

When I bought my NES in '87, it came with a NES Players Guide. Not Super Mario Bros. I had to purchase it separately for some reason.

Most NES Consoles did come with the game SMB. I was just mentioning mine did not, because it is a common mistake to think that ALL NES Consoles came with the game Super Mario Bros.

On another note, I'm frightened for the hard core gaming community. This is but a step in the wrong direction in gaming I think. With the Wii console obliterating the Xbox 360 and PS3 in sales, and PC gaming's biggest sales coming from games like Spore, the Sims, and World of Warcraft, that I get the feeling that even more money will be invested in casual/gimmick gaming in the near future.

I love my PC and my Xbox 360. I play FPSs, RTSs, and sports games all the time. If it weren't for the wife, I wouldn't even own a Wii. The only time I play the Wii, and I mean the ONLY time, is when our friends come over and we want to play a party game like Mario Kart or Mario Party and throw down some beers.

If companies look at these numbers for Wii Sports, and Wii games in general, I fear they may scrap their budgets for quality games, and invest their big money in casual games like Wii Sports.

You can't say they are headed in the wrong direction; there is an obvious demand for casual games. Rather, say they are headed in the wrong direction for YOU.
Commercial enterprises will (and should) always chase the dollars, that's why they exist. If hard core gaming fans support that sector with their wallets, then you'll have nothing to fear.
Everything is cyclical. Video games are at a similar stage as in the early 80's.

Since Wii has sold far more units that PS3, any game bundled with or sold for the PS3 wouldn't come close. It's simple math. Unless PS3 owners are buying more than one of a certain game per console. Then that just shows the intelligence level of PS3 owners. ;)

I think this is totally fair as most people who own a Wii play the Wii Sports game. The game is not free, it is just sold with the console so you have something to play right away.

Counting Wii Sports is like BluRay counting all those free movies they gave away with every BD player/PS3 purchase a discs sold (and counting every PS3 as a BD player for that matter). Everybody does this kind of counting, so it's perfectly fair.
