Chicago (IL) - Taking a page out of Apple’s book, Google is now urging Gmail users to drop Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) in favor of Firefox or Chrome that, according to the company, run the popular web-based email service "twice as fast." Google also labels IE6 as an unsupported browser, meaning it fails to run some Gmail features.

Following recent release of Chrome 1.0, Google is increasing the visibility of the browser. In addition to a direct download link on Google.com, YouTube and within the Adsense advertising program, the company is now advising Gmail users who access the service with IE6 to ditch the browser and upgrade to Firefox 3 or Chrome. Google claims the two browsers run the popular webmail service "twice as fast".

IE6 users are greeted with a new "Get faster Gmail" message in the menu bar of the web interface. The link leads to a page that promotes Chrome and Firefox 3. "Browsers are getting faster and better at running web applications like Google Mail that use browser technology to its limits," the page reads. "In order to get the best experience possible and make Google Mail run an average of twice as fast, we suggest that you upgrade your browser to one of the fastest Google Mail supported browsers that work on Windows." The page offers direct download links for Firefox 3 and Chrome. IE7 and Apple's Safari are listed as supported Gmail browsers.

Google recently dumped Firefox in the Google Pack application bundle and replaced it with Chrome. Last month, the company added a direct download link for Chrome on Google and YouTube. Google's decision to list IE6 as an unsupported Gmail browser does not affect just consumers: Tens of thousands of small- and mid-sized businesses that run Google Apps hosted services may dump IE6 as well in order to get full Gmail-based features while accessing business email accounts via a web browser.

According to Net Applications, roughly one in five online users accessed the web with IE6 during November. Most of them are believed to be corporate users who rely on IE6 as the certified browser for their business environment. IE6’s market share is notably higher during the week than on weekends, we previously reported. However, there is a trend that shows a slowly, but steadily declining market share of IE6, which suggests that more businesses are switching to newer browsers. What makes Google’s Chrome promotion especially interesting is the fact that Mozilla is picking up two out of three browser users that Microsoft surrenders.

Fast JavaScript engines and greater compatibility with web standards have become Chrome's and Firefox's biggest selling points over IE this year. In the corporate world, these benefits could turn into decisive reasons for companies to ditch IE. Some business software vendors have begun tweaking their web applications for Chrome's speedy V8 engine, resulting in a dramatic speed gains. For example, a Chrome-optimized version of the Recruiting CRM software delivers a 300% performance increase in complex queries.

My company dumped IE years ago for Firefox. Personally I don't care for it and I use IE 7 and Crome. Crome is berry fast - IE ain't but every web page seems to work in it. I don't use Apple products since they bundle too much crap with it - i could live my entire life and not see another "helpful" upgrade to quicktime pro message. Apple is one (small) step above Real media in my book.

Well, it felt nice to read of such a blow (and it will be a blow) hitting MS. I just hope Google continues to support Firefox, as they are in the free browser area just to make sure the end user gets the most out of the web experience and come back again, and continue to use the google.com as a start page... it's really a weird and cool thing (if) to support competition towards your own product.

Maybe, IE6 is just a better user experience. The small bars, buttons and menus put web content in focus and don't shove tabs and other things in the way. There's also the memory issue that 'modern' browsers consume these days... I don't need a 500 pound(MB of RAM) browser to look at my google e-mail. Maybe Google should stop trying to manipulate the market for their own benefit.

IE6 was voted as one of the bottom 10 pieces of software of all time by PC World (it ranked #8 on the list). As a web developer, I applaud their ditching of this bug ridden browser that may have a simpler interface but is in reality a huge security risk and a bane to developers and designers all over the world. Microsoft sounded the death knell for this piece of garbage years ago, and I am glad that major companies are finally following suit.

As a web developer, and someone who uses MS products all day, I can say that IE6 is a HUGE problem for web developers. So much work has to go into making things just so IE6 users can see a page, that its crazy. At least 20% of my time is 'wasted' on figuring out how to make something work right for IE6 that works just fine for IE7/8 (STILL IN BETA), FF2/3, safari, opera, and chrome. IE6 also lacks many key security features that all of the modern (released in the last 3 years) browsers have. @ 'IE6 is preferable' and Roland Stepp - Of course Google wants to push Chrome. Duh... they made it. If you spent 5 minutes looking at it, you would see that the UI is even more streamlined than IE6.

If people really want to use Chrome in preference to the much better Firefox or Opera, I suggest giving SRWare Iron a shot. This is the exact same browser as Chrome but without the Google spyware and comes with ad-blocking.

I think they are smoking something because I enjoy work a lot more working with a clean and organized interface. Hmmm, I used to swear by Opera, but at some point I think I migrated away from it and haven't ever really felt the urge to go back. Scratching my head, I think it was a pretty bad event that made me leave Opera and I think my subconscious is probably keeping me from giving it another shot. Hotmail stinks. Unfortunately since I've had my hotmail address for 10 years so I am kind of stuck there too. But Yahoo mail and Gmail are far far far superior to Hotmail. Microsoft is years behind in these online apps. Hotmail is the only reason I still have IE. If it wasn't for hotmail, I'd dump IE too - and I'd love to one day drop hotmail as well.

OK, to be fair, and I know I'll get tons of negative votes - I use IE. But I don't care if it's IE6, 7 or 8 as I use Maxthon as a shell for IE engine, so I couldn't care less.. Never is better, but I'm not gonna die if I'm on IE6. As for Chrome, I've used it for a moment, and that's it. The thing is USELESS. To me browser isn't just for opening Gmail, it's a serious workhorse. And I need all the "bloat". In my book, if I'd have to "convert", I'd got for Firefox 3. A colleague of mine was a devoted Opera user, but he too is giving up on it slowly, so Opera is out. Only two browsers with a HUGE support from developers and users are IE and Firefox. And with both I can have more-or-less same expirience. Either using IE Maxthon, or using Firefox 20 plugins. Since I'm lazy, I'd rather install just one app (Maxthon) than one app (Firefox) plus 20 little applets to have the same functionality. Anyway, I couldn't care less for any of them. All I know is that Google isn't doing it because they want YOU to have good expirience. They are doing it FOR THE MONEY. I like Google a lot, but they are Microsoft No2. One day you'll just wake up and see you have MS OS and bunch of supporting apps (Office, Live! Mail/Gallery/yadda yadda) and Google online apps (GMail and similar). So don't think it's to make you feel good, it's to make THEM feel good.. with pockets filled with your money.

Of course Microsoft adopted tabs because no one liked them. Also, just because you have tabs means you have to use them? I've never seen the "open in new window option" turned off in any browser. Try looking up some usabilty studies of browsers. People prefer other browser over ie6. So, that fact coupled with the huge increase in development time for a browser that isn't standards compliant creates arguments against ie6 from both a user and developer pov. Try spending twenty bucks and getting some more RAM.

I have tried Opera and IE7. FF is by far the best browser to me. I love the add-ons. It's sleek and fast enough. I don't even want to bother trying Chrome or Safari, unless they are just spectacularly better than FF3. Once FF comes out with version 3.5, it will be a wrap.

unfortunately, many corporations, schools and government depts will continue to use IE6 simply because they are stuck on windows NT/2000, which won't run IE7 and so IE6 is incumbent, even if you can install an alternative. I'm a web developer and I'd like to see IE6 go away but expect to be "supporting" it for several more years yet, albeit with a disclaimer

I have to say that I agree with the one saying that "the reason opera isn't talked about is b'cuz they ain't located int the valley".. Which is probably true. But also cuz there (why not I don't know) not promoting there browser as actively as FF or Chrome, that is by google. If you look at functionality, speed (both rendering & otherwise) opera is as fast if not faster than FF, and Safari in some cases. Haven't used Chrome that much yet so can't really compare.. Their also coming out with Opera 10 soon, and what I understand it'll be faster than Chrome. It is supposed to be 30% faster on intensive sites than current opera, got a 100/100 in Acid 3, support for webfonts and lots more.. Javascript should be disabled by default; it's a security risk, and should only be run on sites you have reason to trust. That Chrome runs javascript faster isn't desirable to me. Firefox3 and NoScript; the only way to browse. And Thunderbird to access gmail via POP3.

As a web developer, I see these kind of comments often enough, I compare them with the following statement: "I like to use a computer, but don't install any programs on it please." In the Web World we live in today browsing the web without JavaScript is like using a PC, but only allowing old crappy applications to run on it. Yes, JavaScript can be a security risk, but to have it disabled by default would be madness. Many websites rely on some simple JavaScript to have a lot of their nice features work. To expect the general audience to give up JavaScript and have to turn it on manually for all their trusted websites, is something that is simply not feasible.

Ok, FF3 is fine and Chrome is interesting, but limited in functionallity. But I get all I need when installing ie7pro to ie7. Adblocking, extremely easy and usefull proxyhandling, forms autofilling, spellchecking, mouse gestures, youtube downloader, user scripting and loads of other stuff. And it works pre installed without downloading any more plugins and configuring of them. Both the adblocker and the proxy also is much better in my mind than the ff3 equals(and needs much less "caretaking"). There are already some things that I think the "unplugged in" ie7 does better than FF3 like much faster startup times and opening a new tab beside the original with just a mouseclick, the much better favorites/bookmarks handling(hate that long ie6 like list which have an arrow at the bottom in firefox) to name a few. Combine that with the extremely good ie7pro plugin and you have the best browsing environment in my mind. Not to mention also that more pages work with ie7 than firefox in the first place. Sure you can download and configure plugins to firefox until the moon turns blue, but everything I need just works so damn slick and directly with the ie7pro. If just ie7 would have the same good zooming abillity like opera does it would be almost perfect. But that maybe is something ie8 will get. Don't get me wrong, I don't think that FF3 is bad. I would choose it over ie7 in its original form in any day. It's just that I prefer basic handling in ie7 over ff3 and when ie7pro level(at least) the playfield when it comes to plugins with less hassle, I see no need for me to use FF3 any more.

I'd love to drop IE but....

There are still too many sites where I go to pay my bills that won't work with the other browsers. Example: Alltel account maintenance; Verizon.. Unless too many people start whining, corporate web sites won't change from being built to work with IE but not tested with others.
