Cupertino (CA) - Some Mac users who ran the latest OS X Leopard update installation file found out that the software installation quits halfway through the process, causing potential problems due to a partially updated system. Apple acknowledged the installation issue and offers instructions on how to remove partially deleted installation files from a system folder and re-download the update again.

The most recent OS X Leopard update has been plagued with software issues that can cause the installation to hang when updating through OS X's built-in Software Update feature. It appears that prior to posting the 10.5.6 update Apple has been aware of possible as because the included software release notes addresses "issues" with the update and specifically explains a scenario in which the Software Update mechanism unexpectedly quits. Unfortunately, this information was too late who did not read the release notes before running the installation file.

The company recently posted a new technical note that talks about the problems with the Software Update mechanism. "When attempting to update software using Software Update in Mac OS X 10.5, the update process may stop responding while 'Configuring installation' is visible in the update window," Apple wrote. "This can occur if Software Update attempts to install an update that was only partially downloaded."

The company told users who have been hit with the issue to either quit the Software Update (or Force Quit if the application does not respond) or shut down their system by holding down the power button if the issue occurs while installing the update, and then power the computer back on. Users should then delete the downloaded update files found in the /Library/Updates folder and use the Software Update again to re-download and install the update.

The Software Update issue with partially downloaded installation files affects all versions of OS X Leopard prior to 10.5.6. Users who experience the same issue when re-running the Software Update after deleting partially downloaded 10.5.6 installation files are recommended to manually download an incremental (372 MB) or a combo (668 MB) update from Apple's website.

They rush garbage out- look bad get free exposure on forums, etc.. Then act like they care and fix an error that is almost inexcusable.Beside the comedy of errors that still exist with MBP's, the QC level has fallen on the wayside just to make a few more sales via bad marketing.

Dude, I hate to tell you but Apple has done nothing but improve their systems on a an ongoing basis (which is more than can be said a large company in Redmond, WA). Are they perfect? No, but overall the increase in usefulness, easy of use, and reliability have continued with every release of Mac OS X. Most problems with updates tend to be third-party software. Remove them or disable them before performing an update and it works 99% of the time. If Apple is on a steady decline then why is their market share increasing? They are changing the model used to sell and service computers.

The 10.5.6 has an updated AppleintelCPUpowerManagement.kext file that is not compatible con the on installed on 10.5.6 systems, so what happens is that the update system over writes that kext during the installation thus causing the system to freeze, so to fix it u have to re-run the update installation, but this time u will have the new kext installed in ur mac therefore the update should now run without any problem....interesting isn't

I am still amazed that Apple sells to the market an OS which doesn't really works specially after Tiger amazing stability. Never mind about all its dictatorial and exclusivity contracts with distributors/carrier. Apples wants to become, the bad apple to replace Microsoft, the pimp of the media industry, and the blood sucker of developers. My first and only personal experience was that without an almost compulsory and expensive apple care ( £350), I will have ended up with a non working PB which was obsolete a month after purchase with the introduction of intel. Once I had paid the apple care, they strangely suddenly fixed it. That was of course after 3 repair attempts and some extra cash to jump the queue, but records were erased, so I couldn't have a replacement machine normally given for the 3rd attempt of repairs. All together, I could have purchased about 3 pcs or more. iphone sdk is not even supported by Gs technologies. What do I have to do? spend a few thousand £ every year for the pleasure of of going through the trouble of new generation. I tried 10.5.0, more than a year ago, and this wasn't working at all, tried again a month ago, and it is just able stable. I am just sad for the people who purchase a mac during that period of time. Next purchase will be a linux, end of the trouble. Good luck to u apple, u qualified for the baddies basket. Next purchase will probably be a linux.

Yes, I downloaded the updates with software-updater, and when my machine restarted it went completely blank. The questionmark was the only thing I could see. Had to reinstall the system, I am very angry. Shit.
