Until now, there has not been an effective portal for gaining access to all of your social networking accounts using one interface. A Brazil-based start-up has now launched Power.com in the United States, which aims at linking all of your sites simply and easily. Your data will be aggregated and you can view and interact with all of the social networks from one location.

If you are anything like me, then more than likely once you’ve joined one social network you’ll join them all. The majority of individuals use at least two. In October 2008 alone, 49 million individuals visited both Facebook and Myspace, according to Comscore.  Almost 7 million individuals who reside in the United Kingdom have accounts on both Bebo and Facebook. Many individuals also maintain accounts on sites such as Linked In, Tumblr, Twitter, and Friendster. If you count other venues of socialization such as YouTube and Flickr, then the overlap among users becomes even more significant.

The service has been live in the United Kingdom since August and currently claims to have a membership base of 5 million users. Prior to today, only a few social networks were supported. Currently users can link their Facebook, Myspace, Bebo, Orkut, Hi5 and a few of the niche networks.

Power.com works by allowing users to log into their social networks through the site. The user’s friends, messages, updates, photos, and other information will be scraped directly from the site or obtained via API (it varies by individual site). Users are then able to comment and respond to content directly from Power. If you want, you can even send messages and updates to all of the social networks at the same time. You can also send a message to one friend at all of their social networks. If the friend uses Power.com, then you can also send them an e-mail, SMS, instant message, etc depending upon their privacy settings.

I would ask how big the audience is for this kind of thing. Although the attention hungry will register on as many social networking sites as they can, they tend to gravitate towards a couple which meet their needs best I believe. And is visiting and managing different identities on, say, Facebook and YouTube really such hard work? And how does Power.com plan to keep on top of the myriad nich networks that will most likely drive the next wave of social networking? I’d also say it’s a shame a social media launch page of this type hasn’t also incorporated single sign on with any clever way of managing a single, shared social graph which you can then easily re-use on the destination sites.
