right now yes. stores offer $200 blu-ray players plus 5 movies. those that thought the ps3 was a good blu ray player plus it could play games, now just want a blu-ray player. the problem with the ps3 was that it was basically a movie player that played games as well, as opposed to the 360 which is a gaming console that streams movies.

Everybody has an opinion on this, but I do hope the fanboy wars start, because they are quite entertaining.

I own a gaming PC, an Xbox 360, and a Wii. I didn't buy the PS3, because in my opinion, their games were mediocre compared to the games for the Xbox 360. I owned a PS2 with games like Grand Turismo 3 and 4, Ratchet and Clank, Killzone, etc. They were just average. Nothing was hiting me over the head like "Wow! This was awesome". God of War and the Metal Gear Solid sereis were the exception. I even noticed some games released for the Xbox that were also released on PS2 had more features and better graphics (i.e. NFL 2k5 and Splinter Cell).

So when it came time to dive into HD gaming I made the decision to go to the dark side and get the 360. I'm very impressed with games like Gears Of War, Mass Effect, Halo 3, etc. I can't say I regret my decision. So far every game that has come out on PS3 seems like a rehashed version of some older PS2 game that wasn't that great to begin with. The only game that has looked remotely enticing is MGS4, but with long cut scenes, and a new Splinter Cell-esque style of play that takes away from how Metal Gear games have always played in the past, I find myself not caring that I won't ever get to play that game.

It appears I'm not the only one with these opinions, as sales numbers are proving this. Not to mention that I am coming closer and closer to investing in Blu-Ray, but it won't be through a PS3 now that Blu-Ray players are becoming increasingly cheaper.

I don't know really. It's sad that PS3 isn't selling as well as the other two consoles, because it does have superior hardware. I just wish an abundance of some awesome games would come out for it.

Sony has made all the wrong choices on the PS3. An over complicated processor, price was/is too high, keeps removing features, forcing blue ray which is more expensive.

I own a PS3 but there is no reasons for me to recommend this console to anyone. No games, BD players are now far cheaper then the PS3, can't play any of your current games, no arcade for downloadable content, etc... Both the Wii and 360 offer much much more for a far cheaper price.

Coming from a veteran PC gamer, HALO3 gears of war = great games ? Let's take PS3's exclusives: GT series MGS series ,,, you vote :). Anyway you cannot possible say that HALO 3 is somewhat better, being the lamest game that ever came out in many years, regardless of platform. Other big bang titles are common. XBox has price by it's side these harsh times and nothing more.

Well I own both, but I use my Playstation 3 primarily for Blu-ray playback as it's the best player, but more then the average. As for games Xbox 360 is better and it's not my opinion lots of other websites have said so. Playstation 3 is experiencing the Sega Dreamcast syndrome, too exotic for the time.

I think you mean the Sega Saturn. The Saturn had 2 processors. Developers still can't code properly for 2 processors properly so back then it was a ridiculous idea.

I also own both, and all my PS3 is good for is collecting dust. Blu-ray movies are still way to expensive and the majority of the decent games are also released on the 360 which has a much better online component.

Also @Hemi7382, I'm not trying to start a war, but like the previous poster said, Sony has chosen some very "interesting" hardware for the PS3. They had some very good ideas about where they wanted to go, it was just implemented very poorly. The CELL processor is much better suited for things like TV's and stand alone Blu-Ray players to do upscaling on the fly, which is definitly where it should have started. Sony made a huge mistake by using the CELL in a new product, that needs to have a 10 year life-cycle without even knowing how well the processor performs. They relied too much on data on paper and not real world numbers. Who knows, we could soon find out that the CELL only has a 4 year life expectancy and everyone who bought a PS3 is screwed.

And yes I know about the RROD, (I'm on my 3rd XBOX) but that truth is that they made a grood product that has great software. Software is how they make money so its mind-boggling how Sony could make such a huge mistake.

Where are those games we didnt expect that are awesome? I am talking the ps3 only ones. Ya Little Big Planet does look cool but those hardcore Metal gear/final fantasy heads might skip right over it with out looking back. I have been liking my PS3 but I am rather disappointed with level of games I am expecting. I have been loving my Metal Gear but that isnt for everyone. More than anything Sony needs to fund software development houses to make kick ass games people feel like they need to have. I am still surprised by how much people want to waggle around with their Wii.

360 drop the prices twice in one month, the first drop the PS3 was still outselling the 360, the second drop finally got them ahead of the PS3. Even for the first time in its lifespan, it outsold the PS3 in Japan but it's no longer like that now.

For anyone who says PS3 has no good games, don't listen to these idiots. I bet they don't even own a PS3. There are PLENTY of excellent games on the PS3 especially within the last few weeks. Lets see... there's Little Big Planet (average scores from critics is 95%, higher then both GoW and Halo 3), Resistance 2, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, Valkyrie Chronicles... then you got other games that came out over the years like Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank, Heavenly Sword... and I'll take PSN games over XBL games any day.

I do own a Xbox 360 Elite but I prefer my PS3. There are a few exclusives on the 360 that is keeping me from getting rid of it, if those exclusives ever make it to the PS3, I'm selling my 360 in a heart beat. Nearly all FPS games on the 360 are out on the PC which is where I also game. PC version also have been consistently better then the 360 so no point in buying it for the 360.

When PS3 does drop the price, it's going to outsell the 360... and there's no stopping it.

that's true about blu-ray the movies are too expensives and the video store don't have too many for rental. Maybe they should've kept HD DVD I've got a few of those, and 1 blu, Madagascar.

Also Sony built the Playststion 3 console on the success of the Playststion 2, and it hasn't panned out. It seems like developers wish that the new console from Sony was more like the old one making it easier to program for. Games like MGS4 only come out once a year, so if people are willing to wait like Mac users wait for popular ports then I don't foresee the Playstation being more than a conduit for Sony and studios to deliver media with the rare game coming out periodically. As for the RROD Microsoft has spent billions more in piracy then they have fixing consoles. So in my opinion the RROD is on purpose and a pretty good business move.

There are some games like Half Life 2 which have issues on PS3, and look smoother on the 360.

As a former Sony fan, I can definitely say that Sony's products this generation are not as good as the previous. Are the competitors perfect? Nope. But Sony has been busy beating itself up as far as I'm concerned. They can't even get a decent screen for the PSP 3000!

As for the lack of games for the PS3. Its true. Like it or not. The fact is (if you go back through old news articles on Sony you'll find) they intentionally burned a lot of bridges with game developers at the end of the PS2 era, because they figured they didn't need them anymore.

And I go on and on about the stupid moves they've made. Just look at the keypad for the PS3 controller. I personally think its the strangest looking one I've seen so far. Maybe it will workout, but considering Sony's other choices, I doubt it.

And before any Sony fan accuses me of not having played one or owning one. All I can say is, almost everyone where I live has one. However, they only use them for Bluray or PS2 games (as a rule anyway).

In my opinion, the previous generations of Playstation were about Sony trying to win everyone's favor and being "inclusive" and giving us what we want. This time around, it seems to me that they're saying take what we give you and like it or leave.

Go with Sony if you want, just keep in mind your favorite features may be next on their chopping block.

In my little corner of the world the most popular Platstation 3 game is Grand Turismo 5. Which isn't out yet. The most popular PSP game is Grand Turismo Mobile. Which isn't out yet. (Is it any wonder that in my little section of the world Sony is suffering?)

Personally, I'm more of an RPG person and with the death of Working Designs, Sony hasn't been able to get anything to interest me. Well... I honestly do think Valkyria Chronicles looks like it might be cool. But... It's too little too late to revive my PS3 game collection. I now have enough 360, Wii, DS, PS2, and computer games to probably last me until the PS4. Seriously... I bought in the last couple of years probably about 40 or so games for those systems. I really don't think I can get through them all for quite awhile. Why should I be interested in a "might like"?

Of course... If you find more games you like on the PS3, by all means get it. I think Sony intentionally threw away their edge, but that doesn't mean they don't have any games for anyone. After all, I liked some stuff on the N-Gage. If its possible to like the N-Gage, its possible to like any game system.

It's Sony own fault. Hoisting BRD on eveyone via the PS3 was a risky move. Maybe it helped them win against HD-DVD, but who cares? The Internet is the future of delivery.

Worse still, Sony made all these promises about the PS3 becoming a media center computer; and even a PC in it's own right. Yea, well where's all that then? Sony is suffering from the classic big corporation greedy grip --the harder they squeeze the more slips through their fingers.

From a layman's point of view, console is just a one time investment. What's the difference between 50-100 over a period of 1 year, 2 years? I dont mind paying more for a cheaper tomorrow.

The only solution for PS3 is to make BRD duplicable and sell it real cheap.

I'm willing to buy XBOX or Wii coz I know I can buy their games for $2. Basically I can play all the games released and if I want, I can get the originals just to support the industry once in a while. Bottomline is I dont have to spend thousands more on games like PS3.

Virtually everyone around here has one. So obviously, I have played it.

New Xbox 360 games are initially the same price yes. But frequently they end up being cheaper not long after. For example, I picked up the Force Unleashed for $20 for the 360. The PS3 version is still $60 (unless something changed). Is it $20 everywhere? I doubt it. But I've seen this a lot on games that interest me for both systems. All the time? No. No. Of course not. But I just picked up a whole slew of good games for my nephews (good for them anyway) for just $100 for the 360.

As I've iterated before, for me the PS3 has exactly one game right now that got my eye that's an exclusive, Valkyria Chronicles. It looks like it might be good for me. But the problem is, as I said before, too little too late. I already have built up one big pile of games to play (about 40 for "this generation" and the PS2).

And yes, I've done my research. You haven't. Sony has cancelled a number of their relationships here (in the USA) and outright killed Working Designs (an RPG game company they worked with since the original Playstation). If I sound a little "hostile" that would be the reason, since Working Designs was my favorite USA game company. If Sony killed your favorite off you'd be a little annoyed with them too. I'm willing to give them a shot, but... As expected their idea of results was too slow in coming for me. Which is to be expected, since I'm mainly an RPG person and Working Designs was mainly an RPG company. Believe it or not, not everyone wants to play games like MGS and R2 or wait forever for Grand Turismo 5 and Final Fantasy. But if what Sony offers works for you, that's fine by me.

Now I do disagree with people saying the PS3 is not a multimedia center. Its perfectly fine in that department. In fact for "my little corner of the world" thats all its really good for.)

Some of us have not only played one, but have owned one since launch day. Some of us also develop games for a living, so we leave the "talking outta the ass" for those who don't.

Here in the UK, games are typically £5 dearer on the PS3, so there's an answer to your first question.

So it can watch movies, play games, go online, play music etc... like a Dreamcast you mean... or a PSP? See, doing all that isn't something different and new. Sega did it 10 years ago. As for being a media centre, you would have thought Sony would have learned more from the PSX fiasco. After telling everyone how they wanted the sleek white unit in their living room, hardly anyone bought it.

So let's have a proper look at what it can do over and above the opposition shall we? It can play those expensive Blu-Ray discs, it has a web browser and it can run Linux. All of which, you have to admit, are absolutely pointless to the "gamers". Some versions can render your whole back catalogue useless... something that isn't pointless to "gamers".

See this is where people like you go wrong. You accuse other people of not doing research and then put up an argument that is obviously based on "not doing any research".

Sony's problem was that they said things like... "HD starts with us" and then didn't give people HD leads, so in fact it didn't start at all. They said our console is "TrueHD at 1080p" and then released game after game that ran at 720p if you were lucky and sometimes lower (GTA IV for instance). They said "our console is so good, you'll have to work longer to afford it". Instead, people worked the same length of time and bought a 360 because nobody in their right minds works longer to buy a gaming console, to then have less time to play on it.

No other console manufacturer has continuously crippled hardware whilst still maintaining the price like Sony have. Consider the launch US 60GB and the UK launch 60GB for proof of that, we paid more for less. Nor have they held back a cheaper model to force people to buy the more expensive one. Remember the lack of 20GB model at European launch?

Sony have waved their arrogant flag far too often this time round and people have waved 2 fingers back at them. But please, feel free to add some more "researched" features you think the PS3 can boast, just remember to do some research this time.

The PS3 and so far don't have any regrets. I have never owned a game console so I don't have anything to compare, but I got the 40gb model for $280.00 out the door from Amazon with a free remote. The blu-ray player is the best one I have ever used since the stand alones I have used have very long loading times. Never tried HD-DVD so I can't speak for or against. For me personally I feel I got a good deal because I got a nice game console and blu-ray movie player all for $280. My son loves playing the games, although he'd probably been just as happy maybe happier with the Wii, but I wanted the blu-ray player. Is it the better game console probably not and did Sony screw up on this one, probably from everything I've read, but again having never owned a game console I have no complaints about the PS3, this isn't to say I like everything Sony does, I don't, but I am no fan of Microsoft either, so perhaps that's why I stayed away from the Xbox.

The PS3 is a good console, it's the better more reliable hardware but lacks the games and the price is way too high to compete. The Xbox360 has an excellent set of games, their online system is better and it's a reasonable price. This is why the PS3 is losing out, I'm mainly a PC gamer and I bought a PS3 for blu-ray and MGS4. However I'm not blinded to the fact that for many people the price is the main thing holding it back. We all know the PS3 has some good games and some better ones coming out but with Sony insisting on keeping the price high due to their bad decisions there is no way it can compete with either the wii or 360.

Until they lower the price I'm afraid the PS3 is just going to keep on sinking, regardless of what it offers.

I allready have a decent computer (C2D 2.3ghz, 4GB ram, 8600TG, 28" 1920X1200 screen, and fairly quick HDDs), and I was wondering what I could do to my PC to make it as good or better than the PS3 for the same price.
For $400 I could get a Bluray drive with software($150), a new $200 graphics card (not sure which I'd get this time arround), and a few TB of HDD space.
As it is my system knocks the socks off my friends Xbox 360s, and all the microsoft games come out on PC sooner or later (not a lot of time on my hands so I can wait), and there are yet to be any games on the PS3 that I really want to play. In fact the ONLY game I want to play on the PS3 is the new final fantasy, but thats still at least a year away, and after XII I am a little cautious about playing annother overhyped, repetitive game with an under rated story. Now hopefully I will be wrong about final fantasy, but I'm not going to spend $400 for a console that plays only one game. I mean, that would be like when people bought the origonal xbox just to play halo when all the other games sucked at the time.

So once again the PC is where it is at. You allready have one, you allready have it hooded up to your HDTV or high res screen, you allready have it hooded into your nice sterio, why not just throw a little more in it and make it a super xbox360?

Actually Sony brings in no profit from the sale of consoles (they actually take a lose). Same goes for M$ and the 360. The only one that makes money on the hardware is the Nintendo. Sony and M$ make their money off of game licensing. Nintendo does too but I believe they take a smaller percentage but don't quote me on that. I only know about $ony and M$ because I can read their financial statements. Nintendo doesn't list in the US so I can't look at their financial breakdown.

Xbox 360 is the worst of both worlds, Microsoft building hardware they same way they build software.

What's funny is that Microsoft is fixing that issue for free. If it was Sony, they'd tell you that you would need to buy a new console. Sony has always screwed the customer.

I think the PS3 is a better overall experience than the 360; however, the only thing actually deciding the game wars is games!

MS did a great job in lining them up (so good, in fact, they sort of forgot about making a good hardware experience). Games win, that's all there is to it.

The strange thing is to see both Sony and MS to lose ground in core businesses by shifting their focus on other businesses.

MS is losing reputation on it's core busienss, OS's while it's focused on the 360. It essentially has to look at it's next OS to try and gain back that trust (and reliability).

Sony has pushed the Blu format and forgot about securing the games for it's device. They, too, are starting to look at their next console.

I think both companies have a crisis of leadership and identity. It will be interesting to see how they cope, and how successful they are at retaking the lead in their respective businesses.

Microsoft has been making a profit on the 360 hardware for almost a year now. Sony is the only one still losing money.

For those above discussing profit on the hardware, most above were correct, most manufacturers do not make a profit on the hardware...however this is only the initial part of the business model. Overtime as the console hardware becomes past tech, the cost goes down to manufacture, and eventually as Microsoft did in January 2007, just make a small profit off the hardware. Incorporating smaller nm processors as well reduces manufacturing costs as well and continues to drive the cost down. In regards to the big 3, last time I read the financial reports, Nintendo never actually took a loss according the Nintendo (makes sense because of the "low-tech" involved) and Microsoft now turns a profit off the hardware. Sony has yet to reach that milestone given the extra BluRay included tech. Naturally I assume Sony as well is researching new manufacturing processes to get to net zero in the least, however the last report did report Sony as losing more on the PS3 during the first few years than they did with the PS2.

lets not forget, the reason why the ps2 dominated were the games, exclusive titles only on ps2. at this point you can get all the same games on xbox for a cheaper price, why spend $400 on the ps3, which doesnt have a major graphical advantage over the 360, its just too much, when the price drops the numbers will change, people will finally make the transition to bluray, sony will dominate the end of this console era...

That's sad. So people are on unemployment/Section 8/whatever, and their priority is to buy a game console.

And I know this is true BTW. There are people in the ghetto right now with 72 inch TVs and every game console possible, on Section 8 housing and claiming unemployment (even though they're working).

Both MS and SONY lose money on the sales of their consoles. The whole point is to get as many consoles in the market so they can make money selling games... which are very profitable.

What would you rather have if you were selling games. 1,000,000 consoles sold for $200 each or 200 consoles sold for $1,000,000 each. Same sales but much different in generating game revenue.
