Both Intel and AMD were able to gain overall processor market share in the third quarter of this year, according to iSuppli. In terms of sales volume, Intel held a 80.4% share, up from 80.1% in Q2, while AMD inched up from 12.0% to 12.1%. However, AMD is down from 13.9% in Q3 2007, while Intel is up from 78.7%. The numvers are based on all microprocessors sold, including x86, RISC, and other types of general-purpose microprocessors.

“Intel’s growth is largely due to the strength of its product portfolio in the notebook segment,” observed Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst, compute platforms, for iSuppli. “In the third quarter, Intel achieved a double-positive, producing share growth on both a sequential and year-over basis, while main rival AMD grew in the short term only.”

While there were some signs that PC demand weakened in the third quarter, iSuppli’s early estimates indicate that PC shipments actually reported healthy growth over the third quarter of 2007, up in the region of 12 to 14%.
