Surprise, surprise: iPhone now supports podcast downloads

Chicago (IL) – You may have been scratching your head when Apple rejected the Podcaster application from publication at the App Store, and you surely were not the only one. Apple said at the time that the decision was made because the application replicates a feature that already exists in iTunes, but a new leak from the iPhone 2.2 firmware points to another possible reason: Apple wants to provide the direct podcast download feature itself.

The iPhone 2.2 firmware is already on the horizon and we are hearing about new features almost every every day. We previously reported that the iPhone will not only get Street View from Android G1, but also expand it with public transit and location sharing, in addition to App Store enhancements and other tweaks. A post at the Unofficial Apple Weblog cites an unknown tipster who revealed that the iPhone 2.2 Beta 2 firmware allows users to download podcasts directly to their handset.

The feature was recently proposed by a third-party developer who created an application called Podcaster, which also downloads podcasts directly – and not through the iTunes interface. A leaked screenshot shows what appears to be the iPod interface with a Podcast section that now includes a “Get More Episodes” option.

Much to the dismay of the development community, Apple last month refused Podcaster for App Store distribution, arguing the software mimics the feature already found in its iTunes software.
