Chicago (IL) – AMD’s latest graphics chip series looked good on paper and good in benchmarks and it appears that it is returning good sales numbers as well. Nvidia is still dominating the list of the ten best selling graphics cards in U.S. retail, but 4850 and 4870 cards had a particularly strong showing, especially if we consider that the best selling graphics cards have much lower price points than these models.

According to retail sales numbers released by NPD, the best selling graphics card in September of this year was Visiontek’s Radeon 4850 HD, which moved 4197 units. Second was PNY’s GeForce 8500 GT (512 MB DDR2) with 4106 units and third was PNY’s GeForce 8800 GT (512 MB GDDR3) with 3080 units.

Overall, Nvidia GPUs occupied seven of the top 10 spots, with total unit sales of 21,414 in this group. AMD is well below that – Visontek’s Radeon HD 4870 came in fifth with 3052 units and Asustek’s Radeon HD 4850 at 2509 (for a total of 9758) – but it is noteworthy that 4850 cards usually well north of $160 and 4870 above $270. All Nvidia cards listed in the top 10 typically sell well below that number – only  PNY’s 8800GT at #3 occasionally hits price points of more than $150 in U.S. retail. There is also a 9800GT version from EVGA at #8 (2634 units), which also sells of more than $100 in some stores.

Here is the entire listing:

  • 1 Visiontek 512MB GDDR3 ATI Radeon HD 4850 PCIE-X16 2.0: 4197 (units)
  • 2 PNY 512MB DDR2 Nvidia GeForce 8500 GT PCIE-X16: 4106
  • 3 PNY 512MB GDDR3 Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT PCIE-X16 2.0: 3080
  • 4 BFG 512MB GDDR3 Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS PCIE-X16: 3079
  • 5 Visiontek 512MB GDDR5 ATI Radeon HD 4870 PCIE-X16 2.0: 3052
  • 6 EVGA 384MB GDDR3 Nvidia GeForce 9600 GSO PCIE-X16: 3011
  • 7 EVGA 256MB GDDR3 Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT PCIE-X16: 2670
  • 8 EVGA 512MB GDDR3 Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT PCIE-X16 2.0: 2634
  • 9 EVGA  512MB GDDR3 Nvidia 8800 GT PCIE: 2561
  • 10 Asustek 512MB GDDR3 ATI Radeon HD 4850 PCIE-X16 2.0: 2509
