Cupertino (CA) – Apple today reported yet another solid quarter result that, for the first time, highlights the success of the iPhone not just as a footnote. The company sold almost 6.9 million iPhone 3Gs, which, according to Apple, exceeds RIM’s blackberry unit sales. iPod sales also climbed and Mac sales hit a new record.

Apple said it was able to sell 6,892,000 iPhones compared to 1,119,000 in the year-ago-quarter – a result that Apple believes will surpass RIM, currently considered to be the world’s #2 smartphone maker: “Apple just reported one of the best quarters in its history, with a spectacular performance by the iPhone - we sold more phones than RIM,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO.

Other product lines also showed strong performances – the company shipped 2,611,000 Macs, up 21% over the year-ago quarter and it sold 11,052,000 iPods, up about 8%.

Apple posted sales of $7.9 billion and net profit of $1.14 billion for Q3.

“We don’t yet know how this economic downturn will affect Apple,” Jobs said. “But we’re armed with the strongest product line in our history, the most talented employees and the best customers in our industry. And $25 billion of cash safely in the bank with zero debt.”

I feel for the unfortunate 2,611,000 million people who by now have almost certainly realized their mistake :( I say we start a charity to give real computers to those poor chaps.

Yes, let's found a charity for those 2.6 million that pay for what they wanted, because we can't do anything for those very poor people who pays for Windows Vista at 180 to 300 Dlls and it only does 10% of what Microsoft told it would do...

Yes lest buy a mac that: can't play any high end games (minus spore lmao), work with any business software (auto cad, lotus notes, perforce, starteam, subversion, anything made by vector, etc...), anything you can get form free ware like download.com. Even the things that mac does have that a PC has too are usually have half the functionality their PC cousins have. The only thing the mac has over the PC is unix (free BSD). That's the only thing that makes a mac worth anything. See Apple can't even make there own base OS. They have to steal from free BSD and slap an ugly gui that can't manage multiple windows very well on top of it.
