Chicago (IL) - Just days after the FTC was capable of getting an Illinois court to close down the HerbalKing spam network , it was predicted that the spam level might potentially decrease as a result. So, do we see less spam in our email inboxes as a result?

The short answer: Several companies that are monitoring global spam volume reported that it has not had a significant decrease.

Cisco’s IronPort reported that 183.5 billion spam messages were sent out on Monday - day one of the preliminary injunction against HerbalKing. The following Friday, “only” 176.9 billion messages were sent. According to the company, there has been a reduction in the number of messages sent, but it is not great.

“There is always an understudy waiting in the wings to take over an unlawful enterprise,” said Nilesh Bhandari, product manager of IronPort to the New York Times. “We expect dangerous spam and phishing e-mail volume to continue rising with attacks that become increasingly complex.”

Dimitry Samoseiko, head of spam operations for Internet security firm Sophos, stated that the company has not seen and visible decrease in spam levels. He believes that spammers who were sending messages on behalf of HerbalKing merely started working for other spam agencies and groups.
