Cupertino (CA) – Apple announced a pricey new Cinema display that is designed to complement the Macbook family with an external display. Apple says the 24” LED-backlit widescreen display is the most advanced display that Apple has ever made.

The new screen comes is wrapped in an aluminum and glass enclosure and integrates a camera, mic and speakers, a MagSafe charger, three USB ports and a Mini DisplayPort. It can display resolutions up to 1920x1200 pixels and uses a much more power efficient LED technology to provide what the company calls “to provide instant full-screen brightness.”

After being criticized for its lack of green products, Apple is focusing much more on products that use environmentally-friendly materials. The firm noted that the display uses “mercury-free LED technology, arsenic-free glass and highly recyclable materials.” The new display contains no brominated flame retardants, all internal cables and components are PVC-free and its foam packaging has been reduced by 44%, Apple claims.

Apple design isn’t cheap so a significant premium should come as no surprise: The 24” Cinema display will sell for $899, which is more than twice of what mainstream (non-LED) LCD displays are going for at this time.
