...'cause microsoft won't. get serious that is. what they need is to sit down on a large reset button. they need to do this from scratch and and change the approach and definition of operating system. i am a recent convert to mac and the main reason was the vista fiasco -- xp is old and vista is unstable. mac, now this is a grown up operating system.

Seriously, no one would buy a product with the word Vista in it. What a terrible idea.

Windows has had 2 genetic lines, the DOS Based: Windows 3.1-Win 95-Win 98-Win 2000ME and the NT based: Win NT 3.5-Win NT 4.0/4.1-Win 2000 Professional (Win NT V5)-Win XP (Win NT v6) and now the Windows Vista generation wich is effectively Win NT V7.

So if you want to distance yourself from all of teh bad hype of Vista and go back to the more favorable hype of the NT line Win 7 makes perfect sense.

Vista was never given a chance. If the non technical community does not realize with all the new wifi,iPod,mp/3,phones,upload,download digital devices etc,in the market place encounter difficulty with loading drivers then its not exactly Microsoft's issue. I could care less if they name it Gruntcakes, as long as it's stable, not a resource hog, and plays nice with my current software/hardware. Jeez, I just want an OS to do its job and stay out of my way. And forget about making it "pretty". "Pretty" can be gotten from 3rd-party vendors.

For the commentor who called Windows XP Win NT v6, I'm afraid you need a dose of reality. Windows XP is Win NT v5.1, which it is happy to announce. Vista was supposed to have been an entirely new generation - I'll leave it to the pros to say whether its new or warmed over NT 5.x - at any rate it is Windows 6 and the follow-on is Windows 7. Perhaps it should be Windows 6.1, but we won't know that until we see it.

Some people like fluff. Others want performance at all costs. For those of us who want a small memory footprint and few wasted clock cycles, Linux and to a lesser degree Mac are the solution. For those that want game compatibility and animated fonts, Windows is the choice. Choose the OS that best fits your needs.

PS. How about calling it Vista 1.11?

Personally, I don't like numbers in the name although it does a pretty good job of telling its version. But when finding it within search engines or tags, one might have a hard time guessing which results would be about "7".

Don't know why but it feels great that a giant like MSFT finally gets back to the basics of releasing software. Windows 7, enough said. I am a Mac/Linux user but I have only respect for the new name.

Microsoft needs really to create a new OS from scratch. Apple did that with OS X and the results are there.

Microsoft, as a company, has never really had to fairly compete in the marketplace. This has evolved them into a company that does not give consumers what they want- they give consumers what they want them to have. Microsoft believes it is their legacy alone to shape the face of the personal computer.

So far, they havent really been wrong until Vista... but they are hopelessly out of touch. Its not about fifty thousand features I will never use. Its not about being compatible with every product realeased since 1984.

Its about simplicity. Productivity. STABILITY. The fact is, most of us use our computers for a few tasks, and really not much more. If you bloat features to the point of killing performance, all over things most of us wont use... we will hold it against you.

Windows 7 being based on vista, in look, and inside, is a very good thing for the consumer. We will, of course, see this as vista's little brother and hate it, too. Word of mouth off of the beta release will kill this profuct as surely as it killed vista, and microsoft will still sell 200 million copies... and I bet a third of them will downgrade to XP as they do now. 60 million people didnt like vista enough to throw it away, and in some cases pay to downgrade to a previous product.

Microsoft wants to kill xp, and the reason the industry keeps releasing machines that cant run any other serious consumer operating system is a way of preventing that.

Cloud computing, as I see it, is squarely aimed at microsoft and their OS market position. Think it all the way through and you realize, they are trying to offload processing to a server (cloud) because the cost of that processing is cheaper than paying redmond to license something that people do not want. Explain to me the logic behind the cloud if it is not to unseat the encumbant OS supplier. Sure, it makes hardware more affordable, but as a business model, thats a bad thing... unless you are dodging an expensive license.

Ubuntu and other open source desktop alternatives gain a little more ground each year... It would be interesting to see what would happen if some heavyweights like IBM or Samsung would get involved in some of that development.

I personally do not like microsoft's lording over my chosen industry as if it owns it. Windows 7 is good news, it means the boys out there still dont have a clue, still dont see the conspiracies against them on literally every front they have. They have actually convinced themselves that vista is a succesful product... and even tho we dont want it, we cant possibly really know what we want... so vista gets a new name, a new box, but inside... same old MS software... not designed to please the consumer, but designed to please the shareholders. By trapping the consumer.

Please stay ignorant just long enough, microsoft. It's coming together really well for all of us that want to reduce you to the level the rest of us play on. For those of you who are uncertain that it should actually be called Windows 7, open a command prompt on your Windows box and type "ver". Windows 2000 was 5.0. XP is v5.1. 2003 is 5.2. 95, 98 and Me were all 4.x releases. Vista and 2008 are 6.x releases.

So yes, Windows 7 makes perfect sense.

For the love of whatever god you believe in, give up on the Apple soapbox. It's pretty, and it's different. That's the only reason it sells. Apples are not as compatible as Windows nor as powerful as Linux...both of which run on PC hardware, one of which is for free.

I'm all for Windows going down in a blaze of poop...but honestly, Apple is not a serious contender, and they only get closer by emulating PC hardware and software, which will in the end make them a really expensive PC with a pretty shell. As you probably all have heard Win7 is supposed to be the final incarnation of the Windows architecture and then Microsoft is planning to release a totally new operating system built from scratch.

I think that sticking with the improved Vista kernel and a driver architecture that is already familiar to the hardware manufacturers is a good idea for now. If I get a greatly improved feature and performance vise Vista then I'll be more than happy.

However, I'm starting to think about the brand new Microsoft OS in a few years and the obstacles it's gonna have to overcome. Say what you want but I consider the Windows OS family a success and I have high hopes for the future.

If Windows 7 is a resource hog as is Vista, it will not be adopted by enterprise users, and also shunned by many consumers. I just reconfigured my wife's new Core 2 Duo laptop with WinXP Pro in lieu of the original Vista Home Premium preload. My wife couldn't stand Vista, and now the computer is fast and seamless.

And for the Mac-lover, my son works for a large book publisher, and uses both the latest and greatest Intel-based 4-core Mac, as well as a WinXP Pro-based PC. Guess which one crashes most often? It's not the PC . . .

I am no fan of Windows, but to bitch about the name? You're not happy unless you're bitching about anything are you? Who cares whatever marketing chooses to call it, as long as it is reliable, easy to use and just works and doesn't get in the way. If 7 is a worthy successor to XP SP2 (& SP3), then hallelujah! "Windows 7", like "Mohave", is intended to distance itself from Vista, and the negative press swirling around it. It also implies that Microsoft is returning to its "roots", to a time prior to Vista. I think the name makes sense, Microsoft is getting honest this days and supporting Open Source and other areas, Right now Im a Mac hehe but in the past I was a PC but if Microsoft does good from here on to the future I will go back to Windows.

You techies need to speak up more, like manager2. Anyone with 30 mins experience in development would know that trying to compare Apple's FULLY controlled (hardware and software) development environment to Microsoft's UNcontrolled (anyone and their dog can make hardware or software for the Windows environment and we like it because it's cheaper that way) development environment doesn't know what they're talking about.

I'm not necessarily a MS fan, but wake up people. The whole driver and compatibility issue is a natural consequence to the Microsoft open environment roadmap.

The vista era is simply filling the microfluff coffers again with revenue from failed and late attempt at creating a new OS.

Also just as I stated direct x 10 would not live up to a vista must have purchase. Because direct x 11 will be the version to power future microfluff games to higher visual potential AKA living up to the hype. And many game companies are deciding to not be toyed with again by microfluff, as they were tricked to think direct x 10 would be on xp. Also causing them lost revenues by not embarking on non direct x versions of their games for linux users.

I hope you now realize that you were just as I stated an OPEN BETA PURCHASER... Using your dollars to shape up the next and better OS.

Features is what I would challenge people on when they would state over and over that vista is an up to $399 must have today. And how we couldn't wait a year and a half to two years for windows 7.

As I stated before if vista was the end all as you keep saying... Why would the windows 7 date be moved 'UP" instead of "BACK".

It true microfluff weakened windows 7 down... But it still offer us a punch. You must first realize SOME of the windows 7 list of virtualization features was retro-fitted in server 2008. And in turn retro-fitted in the vista SP1 for x64 system.

This was microfluffs attempt to make OPEN BETA PURCHASERS feel better about their purchase. Veryu similar to Rome bringing back the gladiator games as the civilization and economy was falling apart. Even wasted money on the already forgotten Vista is great campaign. As I stated you'll be quickly steered like cattle to the better OS with XP owners.

Again, I have no problem with anyone who took their hopefully hard earned dollars and decided to PAY to continue the vista beta testing campaign...

Gotta agree with Manager2 and Greg here. I've found that the people who complain about MS are in one of 3 categories.

1. They buy cheap hardware or a minimal configuration (ie 512MB) and expect performance and stability.

2. They buy expensive hardware and then tweak settings beyond normal operating range (ie overclock).

3. They don't know what they're doing and install copious amounts of 3rd party software, toolbars and malware.

Will Microsoft offer a major discount to all those who bought Vista and are not happy with it?
Will you be able to opt out of paying for touch screen which means a new monitor and possibly even more processor usage plus possibly having to upgrade graphics cards.?
The new name doesn't mean a lot unless Microsoft is prepared to play fair with their customers.

It's already been proven that the ignorant masses would by Windows if it was still Vista but named something else. It's the anti-MS group that just needs to shut up and move on.

For the people that would list "networking as a feature to upgrade for. I would respond but it's being changed, improved and tweaked even further in windows 7. They will finally release the "Castle networking scheme".

How about Pedro who gave me windows media player as a feature of the OS LOL ( I laugh cause he could never understand the difference between a feature and a purchased application) but Pedro check out Windows Media Player 12 and the new media center.

The Biometric control panel sort of fluff but very nice if your work with those things.

As I stated earlier Vista was retrofitted with some of the virtulization functionality. Workspaces allows multiple virtual desktops.

Multi-touch will be nice but not a must for the average home user. With one exception we have high end home users that have their PC integrated into their home both for home use and control to home security security. This will open the door for knock you socks visual setups. Basically you can post small touch tablets in areas of your home and control things. Instead of operating from a keyboard. This takes some use of imagination, but basically you could have a little house display and from your bed you could control lights being turned off. Zoom in on a posted external camera, monitor several camera's all from a display device next to your bed. Again no keyboard or mouse needed, just grab the screen and start touching.

Just know that there are uses for this for our near future if we choose to take advantage of it. It's not a simple "pffft who will ever want multi-touch".

we upgrade in order to run on newer hardware, and to run better software. So why upgrade to vista? or Win7? Ive got 2 computers with XP (1 32bit, 1 64 bit), as well as a few others that I throw win2K on when I need them (which isnt often). I run office XP, as well as Adobe CS1-2 software, and a bunch of random games. XP is getting old, but on new hardware it still works quickly (though I was annoied that I needed the 64bit version to see all my ram), and I have yet to see a reason to fully upgrade to CS2, much less CS3, and much much less a newer version of office. The only feature that office has added that I would love is a built in dictionary, but dictionary.com does the trick there.

But my point is, why upgrade? Almost everything runs on XP, and (except for the x64 version) everything installs without any problems. I dont have virus issues, I can still make documents and print/share them. I can watch movies, compress movies, make movies, edit pictures, customize my computer enviornment, etc,. And win7 adds touch screen stuff... which I wont use because I dont have a touch screen. So again... why upgrade?

What I would upgrade for...
What I would love to do is turn my main computer into a server to then have access to all my software and programs from other terminals... which I could do, but dont have the money to do yet. But if they could add such features to a home version of windows instead of the server version then I would upgrade. I would also upgrade for adding a blue ray drive to my computer... but then I have to spend a bunch of money updating a lot of my software... so no dice there. give us something fundamentally useful that just cannot be done with XP, and we will change... but seeing as they dont, we wont.

Mohave wont get released on time so we will have Vista for awhile longer. I dont know where that hippy gets $399 for Vista. It dont cost that much. If you have a decent computer and graphics card then Vista rocks! If you have a crapwad computer then stick with XP.

A better kernel... And a reminder to people who stay locked in the 32 bit world. You DO NOT HAVE THE NEW KERNEL retrofit. This was reserved for vista x64 (retrofit occurred in SP1). You kernel remain binary compatible to server 2003 (and before I get any post on this learn the difference between compatible and identical).

Ofcourse WINFS was bypassed :-( and so was minwin but what they did do was gave more control to what is installed and running in our backgrounds. A step in the right direction.

I call it Fluff control... Just like some of the other feature. We now have the ability to control what fluff is loaded into the OS. The only thing missing is we are still force to purchase some of it. We really needed both.

Why is it a problem you may ask? because Microfluff internally has a dollar amount associated with every application (called a feature by people that don't know any better). Basically microfluff pattern has been to monitor popular shareware and popular applications especially from small innovative companies and create a microfluff spin version.

They then force it into the application as a purchase. People that don't know anybetter jump up for joy and post the microfluff court answer "It's free, It's free". The true reality is that in most cases it killed competition and put many companies out of business or caused substantial financial damage. Some knowing they couldn't win just took the microfluff out of court settlement for hundred of thousand to millions as microfluff continued to make billions.

And for those that don't realize this, but competition breeds better prices and a better product. Companies such as mozilla shouldn't have to make money in other avenues to pay for their product.

Microfluff should put their DVD burning app on the shelves and compete against nero etc in an open market. And for those that own a dvd product already we shouldn't have microfluff's version shoved down our throat with a price. I don't want to purchase their dvd app over and over. I don't need to purchase their weak paint program over and over with every version.

The Microsoft WordPad application gets more features. They had stymied this application every since the campaign to get everyone to purchase word over and over despite most people using it for its simplest letter generating features.

It does a better job of backward compatibility than vista.

You will also see the many improvements to solid state devices. Again vista beta purchasers were the our guinea pigs for the next era. It doesn't use these devices to the fullest.

And similarly vista handles multi core better than XP. But it's still lacking, there are many under the hood improvements and tweaks to windows 7 to take advantage of multi-core PC.

Think about this through the new virtualization and workspaces you can have a desktop/workspace running on one of your 4 cores (if you had a quad core system). That means you could dedicate three cores to what ever you are doing. And have your child running children software on one core using a second monitor. Or the computer could be split between two children/adults two cores apiece. Eliminating the need for dual cases, a good machine and cheap machine setups, dual motherboards, dual hard drives, dual video cards etc.

That's huge...

And think about this, you should be able to boot up a workspace in a different version of windows. This is a monumental step beyond dual boot PC's. Having multiple OSes running at the same time on the same PC. Now we are talking about OS features... Not DVD burning application, REAL FEATURES OF AN OS...

And these are the features that was not and never will be added into the vista x64 retrofit to server 2008. In fact server 2008 will be retrofitted again with Windows Server 2008 R2 and this is where vista will be left behind. So quit posting vista is the future and everyone will be moving to it.

Windows 7 network optimization will finally give business a reason to move to it. There are drastic improvements to WAN networks. Again I would laugh at the people who would point to vista minicul network improvements as a must have. I would respond if it is as great as you say why have they scrapped most of it and retooled many of the remaining parts.

This is why I would just sit back and listen to MS Blowboys post crap on here over and over.

XP is a good OS, but it has many flaws and I wasn't holding on to it nor did I ever post XP forever. My argument was simple vista is a stop gap OS for a continued beta testing effort. Force microfluff to put in real innovative OS features. Force microfluff to have an OS ready and usable at the start. Not this "roll it out and collect the money now" campaign and have us wait until the said features get fixed or mature into stability 10 years later.

It hurts to hear you wasted your money and time. You posted how you was leaving us all behind. How you was the future etc. But fear naught... you paved the way for our next generation and better choice to move too. Again I thank you...

They had CD burning software on XP. I don't think that got shoved down anybody's throat. It's more of a conveinence to burn some data to a DVD or CD without getting a $70 program(Nero). But if you want to author DVD movies, then purchase Nero. Microsoft isn't making you use any of the included software.

Your arguement is 'don't include anything with windows'. So no browser, windows explorer, ping, TCP/IP stack, paint, tracert, netstat, etc. The list will go on and on because you say that there is 3rd party software that does it better. Well most people like to have this stuff included. Quit being so narrow minded about how Microsoft isn't building you a custom OS to fit only your needs.

Firewall is better.
Security for Vista is more robust, including better GPO's. The networking is also alot more user friendly.

I'm still trying to understand why Intel named their new architecture Core i7 (with the number 7) and now MS also uses that number for their new OS. So we'll have PCs with Core i7 cpus and Windows 7 OS.

Mac's and Linux aren't the answer. For example, the latest Ubuntu 8.1 pre-release final beta doesn't even start on my laptop unless I hold down the ctrl key the entire time. Driver compatibility with laptops? unheard of. And Macs....well they are just for computing children.

The fact is that Windows is the only VIABLE option for many users. Vista was just the result of 50 software engineers brainstorming on a whiteboard and you see the end result of crap on crap.

Unless Windows 7 (And office 2009 for that matter)does away with all this "the user is an idiot so lets make them see every possible feature up front in a huge sparkling icon"...XP FTW!

I'm surprised you didn't rave about Windows Defender...which has a detection rate of around 20%? Oh wait there are already BETTER pieces of software to protect against malware....yeah they're called NOD32 and Kaspersky.

Names are not important the Vista relaunch (AKA Windows 7) is more a PR move and less a rebuild of the OS. They will add features and remove others. I think maybe some of these would have been added to the Vista Ultimate add-ons anyway.

Vista is just now hitting it's stride. With proper hardware and configuration it runs great! DirectX 10 make games look much better than before.

I am looking forward to Windows 7, just as I looked forward to Windows Vista. I like the future of computing and think that the biggest changes will be the ones we have not even thought about yet!

As for WINFS (sigh) give it up, it does not exist never was even close to production and would not have been good on a desktop OS. Why you ask, because who would want a blob/database for their "My Documents" folder? how would the average use backup/restore a database. Average users want individual files based in a tree structure, not a SQL database with blobs and log files.
As for MinWin it was never for the desktop OS. It was for servers with specific tasks and routines. It is now basically the Server 2008 "Core Install" EG: no GUI installation.

The ability to remove the fluff has allowed boot times as high as 15 seconds. So those of us that build our machine have more control over this.

I use to laugh at messenger sitting there costing boot time, but eating the RAM of peoples OS.

Those who purchase pre-loaded OEM or proprietary system are at their mercy. However the load time should be faster.

I know many people also install weather and news crap into their startup sequence. This causes internet data retrieval to populate the application with current events. I prefer to only get that and use bandwidth for it when I'm interested in it. This is a personal choice, just don't whine about boot times when you load this crap.

High Definition Model... Both vsta and XP don't take advantage of high DPI and windows 7 will.

Then there is the parallelism improvements as I mentioned earlier with multi-core enhancements. Requiring adjustments at every level of the stack. Say bye bye to win32 programming AKA vista and prior.

The threading improvements will further expose the intel/microfluff behind the scenes back scratching. As the intel core i7 line of processors will fit windows 7 perfectly.


DirectX 11 is slated to be released on vista system (As of now, microfluff could choose to pull the same crap they did with X10 and say windows 7 only). DirectX 11 is huge because it supposedly will include the directX work effort and take advantage of GPU's, multi gpu's and multi core processors.

And unless they get this right more companies will abandon directx programming.

Major improvements to speech recognition and hand writing recognition. Hand-writing to text of assignments, notes etc.

How about the ability to make a virtual hard disk.

How about the OS not having CPU utilization spikes. Yeah I know vista lovers, you're gonna post XP was a hog over win 98. But we all know opening outlook should never ever never spike your utilization to 100%. If you think it does then I have swamp land to sell you.

I/O, Task and cpu priority is revamped. With XP and vista CPU priority settings made only last as long as the process is open. What we need is the ability for us to turn these off. Knowledgeable user should control and tweak how their systems perform.

What people don't realize is that these are the things that hog your system. Me myself, I don't want the OS doing extra thinking and basing how it is going to run based on my previous 5 or so system uses. I also don't want my foreground process getting a higher priority to cpu and I/O in all cases. Yes it makes windows have a better fell during use, but that background task may be what I want attention on.

Customization cannot be lost... That is the future of computing.

My point in all of this is that windows 7 packs a punch... I'm seeing vista lovers trying to downgrade it as a non-relevant OS as vista was.

It's not... it will be worth the upgrade...

I chose to not be stop gap. If vista aka the stop gap OS was as valuable as you say then the windows 7 date would have moved forward or in your case headward.

The fact that after a year you still don't know the purpose of the OS is truly saddening.

I use Linux as my operating system of choice. It is free, completely configurable, and there are applications available for doing every task that I use my computer for. These applications are free to use as well.
That being said, I still use XP because even though there are free applications available for every task I need to do, these applications often are not as good as applications available for Windows. For example, Photoshop is way better than Gimp and Maya is way better than Blender.
I never "downgraded" to Vista because I have used it on other computers and I do not like it as much as XP. It is pretty but not functional.
I do not care what the next version of Windows is named. I will not replace XP until a more functional version exists. As soon as that version is released, I will buy it immediately because even though I love Linux, I still need Windows.
Macs are out of the question. I have an old G4 with OSX installed and I never use it because what Linux can not provide, Windows can provide at a lower cost than Apple.

What's the difference? Trying to make ppl think Windows 7 is actually "NEW". Then again.. the ignorant public will most probably be duped.

The real problem that people have with Vista is that we were forced into the upgrade. Microsoft took XP away from us. Vista is fine... if you have a brand new top of the line machine. For those of us who aren't ready drop a pretty penny on a new machine, we can't help but feel cheated. This and the issues that the pre-SP1 version of Vista has created has given it a bad name. As long as Windows 7 can get rid of the bloat, it should do much better than Vista. The software shouldn't follow Moore's law if the hardware isn't quite there yet.

That and I'm sure changing the file format to .docx and .pptx has really messed a lot of people up and alienated a lot of companies who have backups of .doc files. Microsoft has shown that they may not be reliable in the long term.

Concern, I believe, is justified.

Anyone reading my post knows I have been consistent since prior to the vista launch. That it doesn't have enough of an OS feature-set to make it worth being a short term guinea pig.

The features that I spoke of are in windows 7 and my argument was basically saying windows 7 is the better OS and to skip vista.

But if anyone is only emailing, surfing the net and doing document creation and non gaming then stay with XP until it becomes unusable. There is no reason for a new OS or dual or quad core system for that matter.

Please try reading again... maybe your response was meant for headward who keeps touting how secure vista is. I have posted over and over it stops some additional things but overall it not leaps and bound secure and even microfluff's upper management has admitted that.

The difference between you and I is that I have a consumer backbone. Microfluff forcing halo 2 on directx 10 is good enough reason for me to bypass the product. I'm a gamer and love game, but I love principle more.

NEW FLAST #2, vista was scrapped like 3 times and was extremely late and was beta tested for a longer time frame.

The fact that it was built using part of the sever 2003 code base means it was more stable and mature.

I hope it isn't 64 bit so then I can run all my applications. Solidworks is extremely critical software that I use and it's 32-bit only. Besides, find me a benchmark that proves 64 bit has meaningful performance gains over 32 bit and i'll buy you a coke.

From memory addressing, bit moving on... its hands down better. Infact some of the kernel protection that you read about only applies to the 64 bit version. The 32 bit kernel of vista is in fact still bloated. The 64 bit was retrofitted with SP1 and there is still room for improvement.

The argument youo are making could be switched to "why did we leave 8 bit or 16 bit. Prove 32 bit is faster and better than 8 bit."

If we need that discussion then I would suggest it's time for a microprocessing class. Or just doing some research/reading.

In order to take advantage of new technology programmers must not be lazy and design for it.

Parrallism is a multi-million dollar project because people are hard pressed to design hardware to take advantage of it.

Similar to art you can have anyone create a painting. However, there will only be a few of a Picaso's level. Creativity in programming is needed, and what will be learned is only special people will be able to do it. Until the programming masses have enough examples to copycat and learn off of.

This is why virtualization is the best way to take advantage of multi-processor computers until the programming can catch up. And if implemented as demonstrated and promised on windows 7 you can run that 32 bit application in another workspace. All while the rest of your system continuing to run in 64 bit mode.

Vista can never and will never do that... IMO

The windows 7 kernel is enhanced over server 2008. And they aren't planning to retrofit that kernel, instead they wil release windows 7 sever named windows server 2008 R2.

Enlighten - we have found an issue to agree on. 64x is the future and I wish Microsoft would had released Vista/Server 2008 in x64 only. That would force PC makers to make every x64 and driving the cost of x64 lower.

I think I also saw that you dislike blu-ray. If so, that would be 2 things.

ive been for having new os's usually when they are released or just before if i am lucky to obtain it

used 2k when it was new, used xp when it was new. they always offered an enhanced experience over the previous gen os. but vista, just could not warm to it. im hoping the new os (Win7) is going to fix things, to me its like the SE of 98. 16bit, 98se was the premo os, 32bit xp was the premo, tho 2k is still a viable os for low end hardware, and in the 64 bit world one can only hope its 7 cause vista hasnt inspired much.

we still offer xp with our systems and vista makes up about 1% of sales. I hate the UAC nags, i hate the stupid network panel. i hate that the"more secure os" still gets the same smitfraud attacks xp does.

.doc had to evolve and .docx is far much better format by it's architecture. You can still open, edit and save .doc documents in recent Office suite and will be continued for next relases as well so why crying? Another story is that you should never lock your data in proprietary formats..

Darwin is the core of Apple's OS X, but much of Darwin is actually taken from FreeBSD. As much as you Apple fanboys complain that Microsoft takes from everyone else, keep in mind that Apple is no exception. That's just business.

I do agree that Microsoft needs to create an OS from scratch (and for the love of God segregate the kernel), but that's quite an undertaking. That $300 million for the ad campaign barely puts a dent in it. So get used to more of the same.
