Asus announces quad-core gaming laptop

Taipei (Taiwan) – Gamers and video editing gurus rejoice because the age of the quad-core laptop will soon be upon us.  I’m not talking about laptops with a jury-rigged desktop processor, but an honest to God mobile quad core CPU.  ASUS has announced their upcoming G71 gaming notebook that uses the Intel QX9300.  The monstrous notebook sports a 17-inch screen that can display 1920 by 1200 pixes and an Nvidia GeForce 9700M GT card with 512 MB of GDDR3 video RAM.

Designed for gamers, the screen has a 8ms response time. Asus says a control panel will allow people to dynamically overclock the CPU and owners can select from three preset processor speeds.  On the RAM and hard drive side, the computer will have up to 4 GB of DDR3 1066 MHz memory and up to two 1 terabyte hard drives.

Rounding out the features, the G71 will have a 2 megapixel webcam and a secondary keyboard display (mounted just above the function keys) for showing MSN Messenger IMs during your games.  Of course, all the usual things are included like USB ports, DVD drive (optional Blu-ray) and 802.11 wifi.  HDMI and eSata ports are also on the chassis.

If Asus is able to get this out soon, then it will have beaten Alienware, Voodoo and Dell to the punch with a genuine quad-core laptop.  Dell teased their quad-core M6400 back in August, but that notebook hasn’t reached the market just yet.  Some manufacturers have been selling workstation-style notebooks with desktop processors, but these are monstrous back breaking beasts meant for the die-hard gamer or video editing freak.

Intel demonstrated its quad-core mobile chips back in August at the San Francisco Intel Developers Forum and we managed to see one laptop in action.  Fugger from Xtremesystems.org showed us his QX9300 equipped laptop and you can read about it here.
