Chicago (IL) - Some models of Apple computers are suspected to be emitting toxic fumes. A researcher from the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (National Center for Scientific Research), who requested to remain anonymous, discovered in February 2007 a strong odor coming out of the box of his shiny new Mac Pro. Ten days later, his eye, nose, and larynx were aggravated and sore.

The biologist contacted Apple’s customer service and Apple reportedly sent a technician out to work on the issue. The stench remained. Apple then sent a second computer to the man, and he noticed the same stench. The man then took his issue to the Internet where he began researching and found that he was not alone in his find. In the United States, Germany, and Great Britain there were numerous individuals were complaining of the same stench and the same physical symptoms.

Greenpeace contacted the scientist who took his Mac Pro to a lab for analysis. They flushed out the toxic substances from the Mac Pro and deemed it to be styrene, benzene, and other derivatives.

Benzene is a carcinogen that could cause owners to run the risk of getting diseases as dangerous as leukemia (blood cancer) simply by using their computer.
An analysis was done on behalf of Apple after multiple complaints. The results of these tests have not been released. Apple agreed to refund the biologist for his purchase, but have not provided a public statement to other consumers.

Browsing different message boards, and conducting a few Google searches, it is apparent that the issue described by the French researcher is not an isolated case. We are curious as to why Apple has made no statement yet.

The company has not replied to TG Daily’s email inquiry.

by not letting the results to be seen in the public domain, apple is asking for trouble when a few people drop dead (apple gets Sued for all it has). one thing a company should avoid is damage/death to peoples/health no matter what the cost. It shows apple don't care for the customers but only the money, isn't that what apple`s always been about. I think its time to bin the smelly rotten apples before they kill someone.

I know Apple is probably worried about their public image - but I'd be more concerned with the potential legal attacks after people realize Apple knew they were being exposed to dangerous chemicals and did nothing to warn them. This sort of situation didn't work out well for the tobacco companies, and I can't see it working out any better for Apple.
