Seoul (South Korea) – Samsung said it has begun sampling 50 nm DDR3 devices, enabling more power efficient memory modules with up to 16 GB  capacity.

The company said that the 50 nm samples are 2 Gb DDR3 devices, which offer twice the density of today’s 1 Gb chips and save more than 40% of power when compared to their predecessors. Samsung said that the manufacturing of 2 Gb chips results in a productivity gain of 60%.

The company said that the new small form factor enables configurations of up to 8 GB for RIMMs (registered in-line memory modules), as well as 4 GBs for notebook-focused SODIMMs (small outline dual in-line memory modules) . Using dual-die packages, the density climbs to 16 GB for desktop and server applications.

Samsung said that the 2 Gb devices support data rates of up to 1.3 Gb/s at 1.5 or 1.35 volts. Samsung said that it will begin mass production of 2 Gb chips later this year and make 2 Gb DDR3 primary DRAM process technology in 2009.

It would be a bit too optimistic to expect 8 GB ort 16 GB modules to become an affordable option for mainstream computers next year: 8 GB DDR3 modules are not widely available yet and even their DDR2 counterparts are still selling for well more than $1000.

Its about time! :) I've always maxed out every computer I've owned with full memory. I'm looking foward to 4 * 16GB. Now if windows would actually start utilizing extra memory well. and of course, motherboard chipset makers are going to take too much time to implement compatibility. I just don't get why nobody except IBM stays ahead of available DIMM size availability. Would also be nice to see an intelligent pre-cache program built into Vista (i.e. I run a game, and windows pre-caches all the maps/textures/etc into ram).

Yeah we are def. getting closer to being able to load the entire contents of a game to RAM. Think of the possibilities with that.

For mainstream computers, you don't need 8GB or 16gb chips with most of the applications and OS' being 32 bit... Unfortunatelly, hardware moves at a much faster rate than software at the point...

Lots of 32bit apps or not, I'm happy to lead software with extra hardware. I have faith that some cool apps will show up able to use my 32GB system.. Perhaps Winblows 7 will have some additional functionality for systems with more memory.

32bit Os can only manage 4gigs of memory...

that is total...that means the system memory, the vRAM, and any cahe....it doesn't matter what program you use

I assume that you forgot how certain versions of Windows sever 32-bit can allocate more than 4 GB of memory? hmm? what mvrx said was very valid and i hope it happens. Just because some of you dont want mega amounts of RAM in your system at a good price doesn't mean all of us dont. everyone just needs to bite the bullet and switch to 64 bit

I'm sure vista 64 does still have problems for you. But for most it doesn't. XP 32/64 is garbage. Vista 64 is at least a step up from garbage. As I said before, Windows doesn't effectively use spare memory. If they were really the OS of the future, it would utilize any amount of memory I put into it to pre-cache data, store indexes, etc. Even tho I may be one in 100,000 PC users - If I chose to put 32-64-96-128GB of ram in a system, my OS should be intelligent enough to utilize it to speed up everything.
