Intel today launched a new version of its business/enterprise desktop platform called vPro. Previously code-named “McCreary” the platform consists of Core 2 Quad and Core 2 Duo processors, the Q45 chipset and the firm’s 82567LM Gigabit Network interface.
The new software features (combined into Active Management Technology 5.0) include a “Remote Scheduled Maintenance” feature to schedule PCs for regular tune-ups, “Access Monitor” to log IT activity on systems as well as “Remote PC Assist Technology” that connects those businesses with service providers that can assist when an end-user enters a key sequence.
All new features are available as part of Intel’s new Desktop Board DQ45CB is for standard-sized PCs and the Intel Desktop Board DQ45EK is for small- form-factor systems.
Like AMD before, Intel chose not to organize an elaborate on-sire industry event to launch the new vPro platform, but created a subjectively impressive virtual tradeshow that consisted of a virtual auditorium, a virtual tradeshow floor and the press center. The presentation featured sophisticated graphics and animation, which indicate that we will see many more of these events in the future. Looking at what Intel was able to do, it appears that useful virtual tradeshows are just around the corner.
