Google announced the 20 winners of its Android developer challenge, ten of which will receive a prize of $275,000 and ten more who will receive $100,000. There are 50 more finalists, who unfortunately do not get a share of the $3.75 million jackpot.

The top 10 applications are

- cab4me, an application that helps users to find and order cabs
- CompareEverywhere, a comparison shopping service
- Ecorio, which enables you to reduce your carbon footprint
- GoCart, a software that scans barcodes of products and compares prices nearby
- Life360, a neighborhood-centric social network
- Locale, a settings manager that changes you cellphone’s settings based on its location
- PicSay, a picture editor
- Softrace, an application that can turn your workout into a race
- TuneWiki, a social media player
- Wertago, a social application for nightlifers

It is apparent that location-based features and social networking play an important role in Android phones, at least as far as we can tell from the top 50 programs chosen for Android’s marketplace. Now we only need the phones to go along with what seems to be a great batch of first applications to become available.
