Chicago (IL) - Spy pictures and a video of what appears to be one of the most anticipated American cars in decades have been published on the Internet. As far as we can tell from the video, it is a handsome compact car that can keep all the promises GM has made – at least as far as it looks are concerned.  

AutoblogGreen was the first site that posted pictures of a mysterious blue car two-door which the site believed could be Chevrolet’s electric car, the 2011 Volt. At least judging by the video, the Volt will be about the size of Chevrolet’s Cobalt compact or a Ford Focus hatchback. As most prototypes, this Volt is dressed up with not-so-mass-production-like big wheels, fancy lights and a roof.

Whether this was an intentional or unintentional leak, this video should support GM’s claims that the development of the Volt is making good progress.

The car is expected to see mass production in late 2010, which means that you could be getting a Volt in the first half of 2011. GM did not say how many Volts it will produce initially, so there is an obvious scenario that could bring dealer markups. If you want one, you should be checking your bank account soon and sign pre-orders as soon as they are available.

GM said that the Volt is likely to sell somewhere in the range between $30,000 and $40,000 and have a range of 40 miles on one electric charge, which can be extended to 435 miles with the help of a gasoline engine.
