Chicago (IL) - Canon is pulling out a new big gun in its digital camera arsenal with the unveiling of the EOS 50D Digital SLR Camera with 15.1-megapixel resolution and its new DIGIC 4 image processor. It will be available in October in either body only for around $1400 or in a kit version with Canon’s EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM zoom lens for about $1600.

There's a lot to take notice of regarding the technical aspects of the EOS 50D. Canon is offering a new "Creative Auto Mode" for giving users "more creative flexibility to make image setting adjustments," meaning users can make changes while in auto mode to things like aperture and shutter speed as the camera menu on the back screen spells out options in more easy to understand terms. The back screen, BTW, is three-inches and designed to help consumers make use of functions like the face detection mode's up to 35 individual forward-looking faces support.

Canon says the 15.1-megapixel CMOS APS-C size image sensor is improved via the use of "newly designed gapless microlenses over each pixel to reduce noise and expand sensitivity up to ISO 12800." This sensor, in conjunction with the image processor, reportedly will net you 6.3 frame-per-second (fps) continuous shooting capability (for bursts of up to 90 Large/Fine JPEGs or 16 RAW images on a UDMA CF card).

Continuing on down the long features list, you'll find the EOS 50D offering multiple levels of noise reduction during high-speed shooting, conducting peripheral illumination correction, analyzing the brightness of subjects and automatically adjusting dark images, outputting HDMI for display on a HDTV and offering support with two sRAW recording formats, sRAW1 and sRAW2. RAW settings, the company added, can be used "in Basic Zone as well as Creative Zone shooting modes."
