160 gigabytes ought to be enough for anybody

Nice! tons of RAM in a ± decent number of slots. Unlike 128GB-max mainboards we have currently. (Something like 32 RAM slots)

I though all the channels had to have the same # of Dimms ?

I would love a triple ram setup of 16x3,
Now have they brought the latency down to a level to make the added FSB worth it?

Until 64-bit Windows O/S's become standard, not too many people will be able to take advantage of 16 GB sticks. With XP Pro and Vista 32-bit O/S's, you're limited to about 3.5 GB. Even if you have 4 - 1 GB sticks installed, you're still waisting about half a gig. Does this mean M$'s Windows 7 will be a 64-bit O/S?

If you take a look at MetaRAM's web-site, you'll see that the company is headed by Fred Weber, ex-CTO of AMD.

The company had some brilliant DDR2 designs, good to see that they've progressed to DDR3 much faster than AMD did.

Maybe 4 or 5 yrs from now, we're gonna look back and say, how did we survive with only 160 gigs of memory, we need a terabyte of memory for this 3-D holographic, FPS, with super intelligent AIs. :)

Limited use? Are you serious? You might be able to use the full potential for out the box stuff. But I'm sure a video editing software can be tweaked to use this. Graphic rendering, CG comes to mind with both editing and rendering mixed and loading all your source material and if crunching numbers is 1000x faster in ram then hours and days turns into minutes.

I betcha that windows vista would still use every last bit of ram in that system

The sad thing is that with all that ram you still need a page file.

I wonder how they are getting around the heat issues and latency? If the latency for the RAM isn't lacking, I would like to get my hands on these.

crawgsx, you ought to know that Nehalem doesn't have an fsb. Intel removed it and popped in an integrated memory controller. Pls do your research next time.

Btw smith, I bet Vista uses up all your ram because you only have like 2mb of it and you're trying to run Crysis roflnoob. Everybody knows the standard is at least 2gb these days.

And Cypherdude, 64bit OS's will eventually become standard as 3.5gb becomes a ridiculously low amount of ram to have (maybe in a few years?). There are already some games like Quake IV that uses up 2gb just by loading up the first mission.

heh, yeah if you had 160 gb installed you'd have an overhead of 156 gb so windows can run x-aero, where you can see through the desktop screen into your neighbors house next door.

Here are the official 32-bit and 64-bit Windows XP & Vista limitations. They are from the Microsoft MSDN Document. If you have a 32-bit version of Windows XP or Vista, they will only recognize a maximum of 4 GB. However, other hardware devices, such as your 512 MB video card, will reduce your recognized RAM:
4 GB - 512 MB is 3.5 GB.

This is why you're most likely to have a recognized RAM of around 3.5 GB or LESS.

If you have a 64-bit version of Windows XP or Vista, you will likely have a limit of 128 GB RAM. Here is the "Memory Limits for Windows Releases" MSDN Document:

Yep... the last guy is right. I'm not sure about the video card deal. From what I read of the MSDN articles applications can only use the ~3.5 gb's of 4gb and the last ~512mb of ram can only be used by the operating system.

With the earlier comment about the channels needing the same amount of dimm's... that's only for dual channel etc. to work. With that said the article stated that in the future they will have triple channel setups ... but probably not now.

I hope 64 bit applications get a whole lot of hype soon. I was hoping to get 16gb of ram for photo editing etc. (only have 8 now) 8 is great but more is always better. Especially when working with large files etc. Go Adobe! for making lightrom 64 bit!

And with all that ram i'm sure you could turn the page file off if you wished but you may run into trouble for the really big stuff ;) May i point you in the direction of the nehalem overclock (with what I assume are a Raid 0 array of SSD's) they said 1GBs for transfer rate off of those SSD's! Amazing!
