San Francisco (CA) – Laptop owners don’t have to settle for just two cores anymore because a quad-core mobile chip is just around the corner and we’ve seen it in action.  “Fugger”, the owner of xtremesystems.org, showed us his “laptop” – and we use this term loosely – that was beefed out with the Core 2 Extreme Q9300.  This 45 nm process quad-core chip runs at 2.66 GHz and is an easy upgrade for current Core 2 Extreme owners.

Fugger told us he merely replaced his Core 2 Extreme dual-core processor with the new one from Intel.  A quick BIOS update later and he was running in beautiful quad-core mode.

Ok so the computer was more of a desktop replacement rather than a laptop and the power supply brick proved the point.  It was probably the most massive brick I’ve seen and Fugger told us that its pulls 225 to 250 watts.

Earlier today, Dadi Permutter, Intel’s Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Mobility Group, said quad-core mobile processors will be available this quarter.
