Actually, I got Vista OEM last winter and I recently downgraded, but it's not what you think.

I moved Vista to my HTPC to take advantage of media center. Also, I'm a mechanical design/drafting major, and Autodesk won't get their head out of the sand and make Inventor reliable on 64-bit Vista, so I have to go back to XP....Not exactly Vista or Microsofts fault on that one.

...Vista isn't really that bad. I waited until SP1 was released before installing my copy, of course, but I don't regret moving from XP to Vista. You DO have to have a pretty good machine to get all of the bells and whistles, but it's not bad. These aren't, I suspect, people who've tried Vista and found it lacking, but rather people who hear that Vista is "a piece of junk" and preemptively revert their machines to XP.

... first 2 weeks Vista (64) frustrated the hell out of me, applications not working, lack of drivers, hidden system settings (I am a XP power user).So I downgraded to XP.

When SP1 came out I gave it another try.

Now, I'll never go back to XP, Vista is simply much better than XP and my applications work now, it's faster with a decent PC, I love the new Advanced firewall settings and the new networking components, can't imagine myself working without integrated search anymore. I hate it when, I have to occasionally do stuff on a XP machine.

I also downgraded from XP to Windows 2000, back in the days, because of the same reasons, crappy compatibility and lack of drivers, but in the end we all know which OS won back then. Guess what will happen with Vista vs XP.

This is not the numbers of computers that come with xp, but ones that originally were to come with vista, and then were changed to XP. I think this is a high number, I doubt this many people chose win98, when XP was first out. Choosing XP is a good idea if your computer comes with less than 2gb of ram. They should not sell 512mb machines with vista IMO.

I don't know if 3000 users is a good survey, since we're addressing Vista, which is more of a world wide OS, than a country wide one. Most users should be noted as businesses, since businesses do take longer to upgrade their every day workstations due to logistics. Most home users I've seen have stayed with Vista, the big factor being Vista with SP1. I myself just recently installed Vista, and I don't plan on going back to XP. My machine isn't a monster $3000 machine either, I spent a little over $1200 to upgrade it and it screams.

Ever since SP1 came out, Vista for me has been a lot more stable and less combersome. I've actually enjoyed using Vista...And yes I can't believe I typed that but its true. I will admit that the printers, scanners and other equipment that isn't compatible is a bit aggravating, but hopefully 7 might take care of some of the issues.

If your car has all those problems after 7 years, you are doing something wrong. Hopefully you maintain your computers better than your cars.

If you have 35% of all your customers opting for your previous generation product, no matter what it was, you should be nervous. Imagine what would've happened to GM, Ford, or Chrysler if this had happened years ago. Oh, wait a minute, it DID happen and look what happened (actually 35% of their customers just dumped them). They're all on the brink of bankruptcy.

The only reason Microsoft is seemingly unaffected is because they have a monopoly on Windows and XP Pro is actually a better product. Regardless, I cannot remember this ever happening before to M$, a situation where a full 35% of their customers simply refuse to use their latest O/S. Don't kid yourself: 35% is a LOT of users.

For anybody that is calling Vista - 'Vista ME' is an idiot. Windows ME introduced new features but wasn't stable at all. Vista on the other hand, is more stable than XP.

Most companies can't upgrade to Vista yet because of the slump of the economy. Budgets are being cut left and right.

Anybody that says Vista sucks is either a Mac user who's pissed that they spent 2x for their computer or a Linux user that is mad that they have to write their own drivers.

Most of the issues that Vista had right away was with crappy Nvidia drivers. That's not Microsoft's fault. That's like blaming GM for selling a car that can't run on really crappy watered down fuel.

Bottom line, don't knock til you've tried it.

Apart from the annoying Vista "nag" features that Apple so well illustrated in their commercials, my new top of the line laptop with 3 Gig of RAM just isn't stable with Vista. And going to SP1 brought no improvement. I get nasty start-up errors and occasional lock-ups that XP just hasn't had a problem with. I already had to do a complete reinstall of Vista once!

It was really dumb on Microsoft's part to discontinue a very good operating system like XP in favor of a forced migration to Vista. There are real issues that no amount of advertising and good will is going to fix. Microsoft - Vista is the new Windows Me - A messy piece of crap with added features I don't need. Fix the problems instead of trying to explain them away.

Who wants a computer that suddenly turns itself off and restarts in the middle of your application simply because Microsoft Vista decided to download and install an update/bug fix? And all your work is lost because you are not given the opportunity to save files before the shout down.

Yes, you can turn off automatic updates, but most users don't even know where to start looking for that, much less how to do it.

Every person who comes into our store and wants XP on their computer has had experience with Vista and decided it wasn't worth keeping. Rumours were not involved.

I've even had customers RETURN purchased computers becausthey couldn't get Vista to work reliably on their network with their other computers (a mix of XP, Win98, and Macintoshes). Why, when it is so easy to setup all those others on a network, Vista is still unreliable after a week on the network?

That's why 35% are switching down to XP.

First off, before anyone bashes my comment, let me state that I've used Vista but not with SP1 and I've got some mixed feelings.

First off, I admit it worked great for me. Even my video card, I think I was using my GeForce 8600GTS at the time, but it may have been my Radeon X850 XT. However I eventually went back to XP for two reasons. First, I had an "evaluation" copy. Second, I felt that the features of Vista simply didn't equal the price.

What must have features does Vista offer over XP? I'm not talking business features here because the 35% dropped isn't businesses, but consumers. Only three features come to mind.

First, Aero. Although you'd be hard-pressed to call this resource waste a feature, I guess it passes.

Second, the media center present in Home Premium (which is the lowest a consumer should go). That's a reasonable feature I suppose. If you don't already have a DVD player and actually have a way of hooking up your computer to your TV. Otherwise I don't know too many people who want to watch movies off a puny 19" monitor from the sofa.

Third, DirectX 10 (and later 11). This is what I call a force-them-to-buy-it feature. Granted I can understand some reworking of the internals to accept it. Compiz is certainly a bit of reworking for Linux to get it to do similar. And quite a good feature too - just look at all those games supporting it. Oh wait - what games?

So do I spend $200 ($100 for system builders) to buy Vista? No. I don't think I'll spend any money on Vista. Why? Because the next version of Windows is coming out a year or so from now and XP already does everything I need it to do.

i have had vista for over two years now and have not had a single problem with it!!! Although, I did upgrade the hardware (pretty much new everything)
new motherboard, video card, processor, hard drive, and RAM. RAM is so cheap now its not even funny. 2GB stick @ FRY's is $47.00, what is 47 dollars? a couple gallons of gas! people upgrade your ram it greatly improves your vista experience also your hard drive. A internal 1TB will set you back about $175.00.

Here is my point of view: How many successfully went from XP to Vista? I know a lot of persons who went the downgrade way but none for the upgrade way. And I am talking about machines that are brand new and came with Vista Home or Business installed. Actually some of those who had Vista Home had to pay more for the XP Pro downgrade. But I did never bother to actually do a full survey or anything, so let's take for granted what hopefully unbiased third party surveyers say.
Now, something that I wanted to say long ago but had little time to say: XP is not dead and will not die before Vista does. Actually MS will keep fixing it and abuse their monopolistic position to sell Vista AND XP! And I am not talking about the downgrade scenario, well not only about it. I am talking about restrictions to install XP on single core low frequency and low RAM systems that MS is forcing or trying to force just to keep market share of UMPC and lightweight laptops. Everything is just a scheme to make money. I could call it even a scam, but actually Vista is good for something and I respect it. It is really good for the Average Joe, Dumb Joe and Dumber Jane. It fixes itself more than XP and prevents the Joe/Jane family from crashing the OS most of the time. But I hate the abuse from MS and the forcing down the throat with lack of choice.

Have you ever looked outside your tiny world and seen the other side? Did you ever think of the people that might not need Nero to just burn some data on a CD or DVD? You sound as if you have not. And you want to talk about getting software forced down your throat. Look at the PC vendors that included all that bloatware with a new PC. Oh that must be different. I like that they bundle that with the system. There has been times I just need to burn a few things to DVD/CD and don't have software to do that at that time. But I won't use it if I have my 3rd party software to do it for me(Nero is my choice).

It's kind of like complaining that they included IE with Windows. I like the fact that they do so I can use that, but I'll most likely go out and just download FF3 and use that. But they do give you choice.

I really doubt they are ignoring millions of people that are still using XP. Vista got a lot of attension because of the rough launch but now it's all good.

I would recommend people not to upgrade their systems to Vista unless they know what they are doing but don't downgrade when purchasing a new PC(unless they are only putting in 512MB RAM) that would just be silly.

that is not a good endorsement! of the last 3 laptops I have seen all had vista, first had to be immediately upgraded to 2gb. second was unusably slow. third I just bought a new dell for grandson with a turion tl-60 chip and 3gb. I figured they had fixed all the problems by now but I hear that it rebooted and is slower than his old notebook. Do not have any experience with vista on a desktop machine. It is interesting how the people defending how great vista is are resorting to name calling.

What price would you pay for security and stability? I'm really not sure there is one price for my home being secure and having a stable neighborhood. But that price doesn't reflect what I would pay for in software.

That is how they can ask and justify the up to $399 price for the OS.

When you go to the store and see Nero for $69, Roxio for 79 and a bunch of low tiered products ranging for 14 to 40. That's competition, and they must bid their product price down to make it attractive to the consumer.

When microfluff chooses not to put their crappy version on the shelves and compete that's not in the best interest of the consumer.

In your mind, person X has nero and is wishing for a simpler 50 to 60 microfluff version to use from time to time.

1) Choice... between a bunch of under performing products. Who knows of good laptops that don't come with Vista? A brand NEW laptop, with dual core at 1.4 GHz, 1 GB RAM and shared video memory, and no other option but Vista. This makes you want to switch to mac altogether, but apple is sometimes worse than ms.
And if security is what should make me want to switch (I'd never switch) or just accept what offered without at least protesting, it was mentioned before, and will be mentioned again: Is MS to be trusted with security? Unless you call DRM security...

Lets see one of the cars that I own is 2002 collector addition Trans AM. They added some ridiculous markup 7 to 10 thousand over the sticker price because they were not hard to find and not being sold again until they are remade later.

Hmmm Saturn began and continued for quit some offering NO DEALS. As advertised they are giving you a tremendous deal so there was no reason and all dealers where instruct to not negotiate. The price stood as it did and they didn't even offer rebates.

The 2009 Corvete is being sold for well over the sticker price.

People paid over retail XBOX and play station station. And companies have been caught like microfluff manipulating the public with limited availability.

If you really don't want any 'FLUFF' then use DOS. No fluff with that GUI and mouse. That way you can load what you want to.

Innovation isn't always taking what works and putting your spin on it. At least not in my book, copying shareware ideas such as bread crumbs without fixing major issues is a crime.

I have used vista, I choose not to upgrade my newly built system because it serves my purposes for now. Any post that I have ever made here clearly suggested that windows 7 was the OS to move too.

Microfluff to a huge hit with vista and has been uncharacteristically been fixing this OS like never before. If you compare the past released OS's the never ever never hot fixed the crap out of it rapidly from the start. And never did an entire kernel change in SP1. Our sales dollar matter...
