Chicago (IL) – Market research firm NPD today released its July game console shipment estimates, which shed some light on how well each manufacturer travelled through the month with typically weak sales. All three manufacturers saw their unit numbers decline, with the Xbox 360 remaining the weakest of the three major consoles on the market today.

According to NPD, Nintendo’s once again won the contest against the PS3 and Xbox 360 easily and outsold each one by a margin greater than 2:1. However, 555,000 Wiis translate into a sharp decrease from the 667,000 units the company sold in June. Sony sold 225,000 PS3, down from almost 406,000 in June, while the Xbox 360 dropped to 205,000 from 220,000 in June.

Nintendo’s Wii claimed a market share of 56%. If we include the 155,000 units of PS2s that were sold in July, the Wii held a share of 49%.

Total Wii sales now stand at 11.56 million; Microsoft sold 10.67 million Xbox 360 units and Sony 5.08 million PS3 units in the U.S. so far.

PS3 sales were surprisingly weak during July, especially when we consider the strong showing in June. It was unclear how Microsoft’s decision to discount the 20 GB version of its Xbox 360 impacted July sales, but compared to its competition, the unit sales result of the Xbox 360 in July is impressive. At least in July, Microsoft did not give up too many units in terms of cumulative sales to Sony.

The best-selling game console in July overall was Nintendo’s DS handheld system with an estimated 608,000 units. Sony’s PSP sold 222,000 units.

The three best-selling games were NCAA Football 09 (Xbox 360) with 397,600 units, Wii Fit/Wii Balance Board (Wii) with 369,600 units and Guitar Hero: On Tour (DS) with 309,700 units.
