SO what does one of those go for? $100,000

SSD is still not worth the money, sorry to say. If you have unlimited funds then sure, why not. But you do NOT get the performance/battery savings to make it worth the price per GB.

When SSD hits the $1 a GB mark it may be worth it, but still will be a hard bargain, as a SATA 2.0 drive with energy savings at that point (for the 100-250gb mark) will be nearer to 50c/Gb. (talking 2.5")

SSD's are arround $4-6/GB so: $5/GB*6500GB=$32,500... not quite 100K, but still crazy (but maybe worth it...)

I did say /sarcasm off after that. I really can't see $32,500 being worth it for 6tb. Any spot where 6tb would be NEEDED you would go with SAS for sure.

No problem with cheap cases, just toss out that floppy drive you're using for your SATA controller when installing XP.

If it was 1/3rd of it's size, it still would be a 2.2TB drive.

I saw these drives before. In a military applacation back in 06. They weren't 6TB though, 3tb at best.

One day you will see old pictures of that project once it gets the green light for declassification in about 10 years mabye.

lets not forget that these drives are "solid state memory" meaning, no more harddrives crashing/breaking for ever... correct?

Obviously this won't be cost effective, but the question is....is anyone else making SSDs with this sorta capacity? What's the biggest conventional platter drive being manufactured right now? Sure, it may cost $100k, but everything gets cheaper over time. The fact that they're doing it at all is something worth noting. Of course...by the time this thing drops to a reasonable price, I'm sure everyone will be running SSDs with multiple TBs of capacity. It's a step in the right direction though.

So they chained together a huge load of flash chips. That's not exactly rocket science nor is it particularly impressive.

Sure, the capacity is much larger than existing SSD's but so are the drives. SSD capacity is driven by cost and the desire to sell multiple upgrades.

Why start with a 256GB SSD when you can sell a 32, then 64, then 128, then 256? It's not *quite* that bad (as SLC and MLC densities do grow), but it happens. Why do you think 1.8" and 2.5" SSDs generally offer the same exact capacity? You can fit several more chips in a 2.5" drive case but they don't (for now).

The price for this is going to be a big premium over 'standard' SSDs so the 100k guess is probably closer to accurate. Except you need at LEAST a mirror for data safety.
