I've been saying it for months and months... This doesn't surprise me in any way.

If you are all in the same boat I am, we have one provider of broadband internet available for home use: Comcast. DSL is a joke, as most folks don't even live close enough to get it, and when they do, their up speeds aren't bad but down speeds are limited even worse than broadband. What is needed is some good old fasion competition. I bet if another company out there did it faster/cheaper and people started jumping ship, companies like Comcast would step it up. Unfortunately, our government in this state gave them the monopoly on providing cable services.

the problem was when DSL companies were getting innovative and trying to service customers, our beloved government allowed ATT, Comcast, and Timewarner to elbow them out of the market with dirty tactics, until they could compete on prices. Now who is going to pay $130-$150 a month for a service that ATT can marginally provide for $30 a month, and then turn around and sell your data to the US government.

Well keep in mind there's plenty of dark fiber, and Comcast has the coffers to buy it, but they choose not to, there are two defining reasons our broadband is behind everyone else.

The size of the country, it's huge, look at Russia and China, they're suffering from similar problems. Two, there indeed, as other posters have noted, no competition for the dominant broadband provider, Comcast.

The only competition in the near future is FiOS, but FiOS isn't even available in my entire state, and who knows how long it'll take to roll out, many, many years I imagine, so right now Comcast is AT&T to phone service in the 80s and 90s, abusing customers, charging too much, and keeping their monopoly well protected.

Since we are so used to slower speeds I do not mind an even slower speed if it saves me a few bucks/month. If I were from Japan I would be screaming bloody murder!
