I live in San Francisco and I'll be the first to tell you that recycling is already common place throughout the city. He's beating a dead horse in an attempt to bring more recycling revenue into the pockets of the city's garbage collectors. It's not about being green, it's about money. Hey Newsom, let's take care of all the bums and aggressive panhandlers first. Then let's take care of all the plainclothes criminals that walk around doing whatever they want. Once people start to feel good about where they live, then maybe we can switch gears and start feeling more accepting towards your agenda...which essentially consists of bleeding the wealthy to death to fund the cities unsuccessful social reform programs and mounting debt as a restult of city payroll abuse. I've had friends visiting from New York tell me the Tenderloin is crazier than anything they've ever seen. We have to live with this guy until January 2012! I'll probably leave the city before then.

Some of you don't understand how if the whole nation would recycle how it would help the Economy.
Recycling is cheaper in most cases than the cost of raw material. I have always recycled and i even clean out other peoples yards and make a bit of Profit in the end at he scrap yard. Averg $350 a week for 4 hours of work. Dow Chemical Wastes alot and need a $10,000,000 fine if they doesnt recycle. Same with Exxon Moblie and Edison Swiesh. 3 Big ass companies in south louisiana where i live. They really trash the place.

Do all people of this type run amok when they are voted into office? So good..... many people are recylcling already. I will do my part to recycle when I am ready. But if some A$$ is going to stand there and threaten me, then he can go.......


What is freedom again. Some people need reminding. It isn't the trash guy writing you a ticket because you put a plastic bottle in the wrong trash bin. We have crossed the line so many times that when one's freedoms are eroded we hardly notice.

You are wrong. Recycling is NOT cheaper than the cost of raw materials, except in the case of metals. If glass bottles are re-used directly, of course, it is cheaper, but glass is not generally cheaper to recycle. Paper, however is the worst.

Young forests clean the air. Old forests do not (even Wired wrote an article about that one a few weeks ago). 70% of all paper used in the U.S. is from forests which were planted for the sole purpose of producing paper. So basically, they plant thousands of square miles of forests, let them clean the are for 10 or 15 years, and then cut them down and re-plant before they can start releasing greenhouse gasses. Recycling blocks this cleansing process.

In addition, paper recycling creates a great deal more C02 than original paper production. Put used paper in the landfill, where it belongs, and quit messing up the environment. I hope Greenpeace (jerks that they are) gets off their butt and sues to stop this nonsense. I am in favor of using impact fees to help maintain the economy, but a $1,000 fine for throwing away the newspaper does not qualify as a legitimate impact fee. If you want to help the environment, fine people $1,000 for driving an SUV in your city.
