Chicago (IL) – It has been six weeks since Firefox 3 has been released and if we believe market share numbers provided by an ongoing survey of NetApplications, then it appears that Mozilla has had a successful launch with market share gains, especially at the expense of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.

Examining NetApplications’ numbers, it is almost certain that this data is highly dependent on daily user behavior and that any results have to be taken with a grain of salt. But if the numbers are any indication then it is clear that Microsoft’s Internet Explorer market share is trending down, while Mozilla is playing with the 20% range and is successfully jumping over this mark more often.

The average market share for Firefox was 19.27% in June, up from 18.41% in May. IE dropped from 73.75% to 72.95% in the same time frame.

According to the most recent data made available by the market research firm today, Internet Explorer stands at 69.88% today, while Firefox 2 and 3 account for a combined market share of 20.68% (Firefox 2: 13.75%, Firefox 3: 6.92%.) Since the launch of Firefox 3 on June 17, IE’s share was as high as 74.30% and played at least 12 time with numbers below the 71% mark, while today’s estimate is a new low for the browser in NetApplications’ chart.

On the other side, Firefox was estimated to have accounted for a market share of 17.81% on June 17 (Firefox 2: 16.19%, Firefox 3: 1.62%) and was able to jump over the 20% barrier eight times since then. Firefox 3 has been continuously gaining market share since launch and Firefox appears to be making a slight comeback in recent days, after falling as low as 12.37% on July 23. July 26 and July 27 have been the first two consecutive days on which Firefox was able to maintain a market share above 20%.  

Since the day of the introduction of Firefox 3, Firefox was able to add 2.85 percentage points to its market share, while IE lost 4.20 points in the same time frame.

Actually, just yesterday I was at my mom's fixing her network and apparently all of them have switched to Firefox on both their windows and mac machines. They're over the age of 40 so looks like your last statement is disproven.

Actually, I'm over 40 and have both beat. I use Avant Browser which has always had all of the FF features including script blocking, tabbed browsing, speed, ability to block active-x, ability to block flash, bookmarks to a central server so they available anywhere, etc. *AND* it uses IE as the back end so I'm compatible with everything. The best of both worlds, plus I don't have to deal with the swiss cheese that FF is...

Wait for IE8..... I haven't even installed IE7 yet. I'm more then happy with firefox and don't even think about using IE. If a website can't be viewed with firefox, the have a customer less.

Try this geek trick: In the URL window, type about:config Scroll down to network.http.pipelining. Double click that line to turn pipelining on. Then double click the line below it and change it from 4 to 30. Now, instead of going out and grabbing an image, then the next image, then some text, then another image...Firefox opens up to 30 connections to their webserver at once... It will pause for half a second, then POOF! The whole page appears at once. We've been installing Firefox on all of our customer's computers for years and years.

This is only helpful on sites with very large amounts of data. Also, both IE, and Opera can be tweaked in this manner as well. Another thing, FireFox does NOT recognize anymore than 8 simultaneous pipelines-whether you type in 30, 50, or 1000. The parameters are from 1 to 8.

FF has those great native stuff we're all tired of hearing about. But what really makes it awesome are those community plugins. There's stuff there that you just can't believe in! A great tip (albeit for FF2) is a Second-Take video at Tom's Games. They list their top 5 plugins for FF2. I hope they make such a video for FF3 soon! :)

yea...I mean the general public that barely can serve the web and do simple stuff on computer. No the parents of sons that are in forums like this that is basically doing administrator for their parents...... Most people uses browser comes with the new computer....if hp install firefox...then it's firefox...if apple install sarfari...then they just use it as is.....just like all the cell phone browsers ... Most people don't go out of their way to install a new browser..... just like there is people changing out their car stereo but most people just use what comes with the car. that's my point.

I do have to say FF3 is alot better than FF2(can anybody say memory leaks). I just love how the browsers are getting better and better. FF3 is great but I have used IE8 some. IE8 is looking great. Competition is great.

yea,, wait for Microsoft to throw in some non-standard web stuff to keep their browser on top to the lament of many web designers. Quite frankly I don't care what browser people use, but a 20% share on something you have to download yourself: that's impressive! Shows that Mozilla's web advertising has paid off.

Actually the teeny bopper that made the comment that no one over 30 know about firefox is clearly ignorant in the ways of the world. I for one have only used internet explorer when forced to over the past 13 years. Actually studies show that firefox users tend to be more sophisticated and loyal, as opposed to younger flavor of the month users, and that many of them are over 30. These users tend to be core users of mozilla platforms and keep the numbers from fluctuating more than they already do. One reason for this is that many of the "over 30" crowd started on the net with netscape, where the roots for mozilla/firefox came from, and never fully adopted internet explorer. Another is that they tend to be less inclined to run towards the latest bright and shiny object, and simply go with the platform they believe is best and stick with it. This will likely decrease defections when the latest internet explorer is released with non standard html code features
