Los Angeles (CA) – The game console market is getting more interesting: Following Microsoft’s time-limited price cut of the Xbox 360 Premium, Sony has announced an upgrade of its 40 GB console to 80 GB, which could be interpreted as a permanent price cut of the flagship 80 GB Playstation 3, despite the loss of PS2 compatibility. The decision between an Xbox 360 and a PS3 is now much less a question of cost, but a question of how much the Xbox’ entertainment features or the PS3’s Blu-ray drive are worth to you. 

Sony has seen its PS3 gain traction in recent months and the company now seems to be determined to pull further ahead of Microsoft, which lately seemed to be struggling in European and Asian markets. Sony said that it will drop the 40 GB version of the PS3 and replace it with a 80 GB version, which will retail for $399. If you are not interested in PS2 games, then this new version effectively could either be seen as an upgrade or a substantial price drop.

$399 is still a steep price tag for a game console, but Sony is now approaching Xbox territory. The PS3 is now right in the middle between the $449 Xbox Elite with a 120 GB hard drive and the $349 60 GB Xbox Pro. Count in the fact that the PS3 comes with a Blu-ray drive and the Xbox stays with an upscaling DVD player and some could see for the very first time a price advantage for the PS3. Microsoft has recently upgraded its Xbox 360 with new entertainment features and is driving the console much more to become an entertainment center, it will be interesting to see whether Microsoft’s or Sony’s console will be collecting the dollars down the road.

The downside of this cutthroat competition, of course are shrinking margins or increasing losses. The PS3 and especially the Xbox 360 are in a time of their life-cycles where both should be starting to actually make a profit. While Microsoft actually may be making a profit (at least its gaming and entertainment division already does), Sony’s latest price cuts raises further doubts, if the PS3 can ever become a profitable business. As part of a recently filed financial report, the company said that it has lost $3.3 billion on the PS3 so far and analysts actually doubt whether the companies will ever be able to recoup those losses.  However, the Microsoft’s balance sheet looks even worse: Combined losses of the Xbox and Xbox 360 between 2002 and 2007 exceeded more than $7 billion, according to SEC filings.

However, it is not difficult to see that Sony just made a very aggressive move and Microsoft’s temporary price cut seems even more half-baked now. The $299 20 GB Xbox 360 will only be available until supplies last and the new 60 GB almost seems expensive. Another price cut in the near future may me inevitable for Microsoft.

You forgot to do your research and the real reason you buy a console in the first place: GAMES. Sony's #1 issue with the PS3 is content. Because they are lacking it. #2 issue, is price. This should help but people will just buy it for a Blu-Ray player. Hence no money making there because they make the money off of the software, controllers, etc. They will make a little on the blu-ray movies but not enough to break even on the console. Looks like the PS3 is setup for big failure unless they get some killer excusive apps. FFXIII is coming to both the PS3 and 360.

Sony just basically shot themselves in the foot with this move. For one it is not the same model as the current 80gig. It is the same as the 40gig that is out now with no Backwards Compatibilty for PS2 games. People want BC and Sony's Peter Diller confirmed to Gamespot yesterday that they will no longer have a BC SKU in the US. So what they did is slapped a 80gig HDD on the current 40gig SKU. What is more is they told people these will be in stores essentially telling people to wait until September for a larger HDD. What kind of nonse move is that? I still think the following may be their lineup for the holiday: XBox 360 60 GB "Premium": $325 or even $300 XBox 360 "Arcade": $250 (MS is on record as saying that it's important to offer a low price point even for a gimped machine, because people giving gifts have a set price in mind) XBox 360 "Elite": $400 If Microsoft can pull this off then they will not only be offering a 120 GB machine for the same price as Sony's 80 GB, but they will also be offering an HDD-less machine for the same price as the Wii!

Please consider, the $499 console had backwards compatibility while this is basically the 40GB version with a bigger harddrive, that any 40GB user could swap on their own. I do not think this is a real threat to Microsoft. The entry into the Ps3 market is still $399, and thus more expensive than even Microsofts 60GB console. This article makes more out of it than it is. To Sony it is nothing more than buying 80gb hdds for the price of the former 40gb. This would have been big news if it had indeed been the original 80GB that could play PS2 games, and not the 40GB version that got features taken away.

I'm not sure I agree with the "very first time" comment, for people wanting to play online, connect to their network wirelessly, play HD movies, have a bigger HDD etc. the PS3 has been the better value for long time - when you factor in the expensive extras MS charge for that are included as standard with the PS3, the 360 comes off far worse in terms of value for money. As for the new 80GB it has the same functionality as the 40GB - it's not the 80GB model at a 40GB price. It's not clear at this point what will happen to the fully-featured 80GB version (if they scrap it that will save Sony a fortune). In terms of profitability it will cost Sony far less to switch the HDD than it would to knock $50 off the price. HDD's get cheaper each day and there comes a point when it would actually cost you more to carry on making the smaller size instead of switching to a larger size (which is why MS have - finally - increased their small and WAY overpriced 20GB HDD)

It is my believe that the PS3, even though on the reports shows losses, actually is making Sony some pretty good pocket change. I think it's safe to say that the HD war was won because of the PS3. I would probably have to say that Blu-Ray is going to rake in a lot of money for years to come long after the Xbox 360 falls off the map.

All anyone ever did (or should have done) was buy the $400 40 gig model and buy a $20 100gig hard drive and replace it. There, even MORE memory than the $500 80gig, for like the same price as the "low end" model. The PS3 is still $400 after this "price cut". Nice stats there, slapshot. The Xbox360 price cut was an actual price cut. You can now get an xbox for cheaper than before. That's a real price cut. If you bothered to research the issue before writing your article, you would have known that in fact Sony did not drop the price of its 80GB PS3, but rather increased the HDD size of its 40GB model, effectively discontinuing two models and introducing a BRAND NEW SKU (So much for Sony complaining about the number of models Microsoft has for its 360). Indeed, the new price for the new model is not a price decrease of the 80GB. The new model is effectively the old 40GB (a few less input options, memory readers, and most importantly NO backward compatibility with PS2 games) with a larger harddrive. **All this means is a redesign of their original $400 price point machine, not a price drop as this model is basically the same with 40 extra gigs of HDD space**

One major detail not mentioned in this article is that while Sony is dropping the 80GB PS3 to $399 it's also reducing the feature set by eliminating PS2 compatibility. Anything missing from the current 40GB SKU will also not be present on the new 80GB SKU. Make no mistake, they're not doing this to offer the consumer more for less, this will save Sony money in the long run as 40GB drives (if they're still made) most likely cost the same as 80GB drives now.

It is not a price cut. Sony is upgrading the HDD from 40GB to 80GB. They are dropping the Emotion Engine emulation completely. So it is not the current 80GB model for $399.99, but rather the curent 40GB with a larger hard drive. Also the current 80GB model has extra usb ports and a card reader. All of which are not going to be included in the new model.

I would now again, as I had in the past tune out all whimpering by xbox fans, about how their xbox is better than ps3 (As what any insecure competitor would say always comparing to see if they're better than their lead). PS3 fans know what to expect from sony, knowing that gratification would come with patience. As for the game line-up its only a matter of time (considering the 360 had a year's worth of head start before the 3). I believe the time has come for the 'ex-box' fans to calm down. Or go back to comparing which system makes the games better under the microscope, which ever they prefer. Isn't it still just a....game?! ;)

I own both the 360 and PS3. Not sure why the PS3 as it just sits. I've had it for a year now and I still don't see a reason to play it. The 360 is now churning out great games and xbox live is thriving. I thought my PS3 purchase would replace my 360 but not so. Also almost everything on the PS3 so far has been on the 360 as well. This holiday and next summer the Ps3 will be in stride but will that be too late ? probably. Blu Ray to me is a waste of extra money. I prefer to rent DVD's and the Blu Ray selection is weak at best.

...an 80GB HD isn't any more useful than the 40GB HD for the great majority of us who purchased or will purchase a PS3 for it's only real use - as a Bluray player. Once the PS3 decides to release content that makes it beneficial to own a PS3 and not a 360, then we can begin to talk about price value. Right now, the PS3 is just a bluray player with the possibility, at a later date, of playing video games. I've had my PS3 for a year now...still own zero games.

Sony cut the price of the PS3? That's news to me. According to this article, the PS3 will still cost $400. That's not a price cut. All they really did was switch to a bigger hard drive. Given how cheap hard drives are these days it's actually more surprising that they added only 40 GB's. I'm still waiting for the price of the PS3 to fall sub-$300 before I pick one up. With as expensive as peripherals, games, and BluRay movies are these days, I can't justify the current price of a PS3 especially with food and gas going up so much.

Horrible article man. You fail to mention that the PS3 doesn't get a price cut, but rather just give you a larger HDD for the same price. This has been done 3 times before for the PS3 and hasn't helped sales for more than a week. Why? Because its not cutting the price for those people who don't want/need a HDD that size. Sony is a big gigantic idiotic corporate, with no mind at all. Not only is the idea stupid, but it has failed several times in the last few years. What they should be doing is keeping the PS3 40GB and cutting the price by $50, or even better, bringing back the 20GB PS3 and dropping the price by $100. The reason people aren't buying PS3's isn't cuz the harddrive, it is because of the PRICE! Offering the same base price, with a larger HDD will change nothing. As for you being biased. You fail to mention that the 360 Premium gets a price cut, and instead compare the PS3 to the new SKU and the Elite. Too bad those are special SKU's that the majority of people do not get. Comparing the Premium to the 80GB is the only fair way to do it, and $300 vs. $400 is not all that close. Sony still has a long way to go. And finally, while Blu-Ray is important to much of the less than 20% of americans that have HDTV's, the most compelling reason to get either system is, and always has been software. yes, games amazingly, are still the main reason people buy game systems. And when the 360 has more than 4 times the number of games the PS3 has. More FPS games, more RPG, Family, Arcade, and pretty much more of everything. More exclusives, more third party, more AAA titles. That isn't bias, thats just true facts. Sales figures prove it all. The PS3 has only 8 games that have over 1 million copies sold, while the 360 has 28, with several big names to add to that list soon. M$ has nothing to worry about, as they do have a lower price still, much lower, and more games. Those are the only two reason the PS3 is doing so poor, because if people really cared about Blu-Ray, then they would be winning right now. Sony needs to get their act together, but they are a bunch of idiots, and totally ruined their chances this gen.

We know how much a hard drive costs these days. At their volumes they should be purchasing these drives for sub $10. The delta between 20/40GB and 60/80GB should be $1-$3 at best. These price cuts are approaching insulting. Try software bundles or perhaps controllers. Oh? Did I forget to mention that you can buy a PC with a 20" widescreen monitor for under $400, drop in a $100 video card, and have a system that is superior to either X360 or PS3? (with a nice HD display!) The only advantage either of these devices have anymore is the BR drive in the PS3.

Although, the 60gig would have been handy, i thin MS might have a slight advantage especially with users like me who: 1. Don't care about blueray 2. Prefer rumble Even though the whole value for money topic has been beaten to death.... there are some 'value's that I just don't care for in the PS3 1. Wireless: My modem sits right behind my TV. I'll be 43th person to mentioned that this is not a price cut, rather a free hard-drive upgrade. The cheapest and quicker solution for Sony to get more installations is by swapping hard drives between two PS3 units to make both of them for $399. Open PS3 80GB and PS3 40GB and swap the hard-drives. Now it's drills down to bigger hard drive or backwards compatibility while both units are at $399 range. BTW, full re-use of 40GB hard drive intentory.

The PS3 also comes with built-in wireless and the online service is free. Microsoft makes you spend an extra $100 if you want a wireless adapter and $50 for the Live Gold for a year. Sure Xbox 360 has a slight edge in the games department now but that is starting to change. Anyone that thinks they get more with the Xbox 360 is just living in denial. And who cares about backward capability? I'm not spending $400 on a machine to play games that came out 5 years ago.

It is time for the ultra quiet console that uses USB keys for the games. No more spinning slow DVD or blue ray discs. I have not bought a console yet, as I am still happy on my pc, but if a console came out that does not need a dvd, I think I would jump on it. I hate waiting for anything to load, but I hate it even more when you hear a cd spin! Yes my ears are very sensitive and it annoys me! But seriously with 8,16,32GB USB keys selling for pretty cheap... Now that being said, I would buy an xbox today if it had blue ray on it. So far now I wait!

As much we would all like to see systems compete on a purely game-to-game basis, that era is over. Nintendo may not be a "direct competitor", but it has shown that there is a larger market for these machines outside of the hardcore gamers (like me). So to continue arguing that the PS3 is not a comparable gaming machine is not only redundant, but misplaced. I will admit that the Xbox is destroying Sony when it comes to available software, and there really needs to be more PS3 games. However, Sony is, and has been, looking at the larger picture here. By providing a game system that can also store pictures/music/video, contains an HD player, has WiFi connectivity, and now a movie database (granted Xbox's is better), Sony is attempting to take over the Entertainment Center. They want to be the one machine that you can connect to your TV and everyone in the family can enjoy it (in HD), from the gamer to the movie watching parents. Now being family useful is the Wii's dominant place, but it doesn't offer all the nice add-ons. I think what is happening is that Sony is beginning to care less about how they perform in the gaming arena, and more concerned with getting the PS3 in more households so that they can make more money off of games/blu-ray/downloads. There will always be competition between MS and Sony game-wise, but i truly foresee Sony's future competitive target being Apple (PS3 vs. AppleTV/iHome)

You can say that again... Sony hasn't quite dropped the ball completely, when it comes to games, but because their machine is such a pain in the ass to develop games on, it takes forever...Let us not forget that PSN is nowhere near what XBL is. People who are serious about playing online play on XBL, its just better. Why do you think sony trying to go "HOME".Copy Cats... You can store pics, music, movies and all that crap on your 360 also, but anyone who spent money on a P3 probably has a computer, and uses it for that stuff rather than a P3 or 360 anyway. Watching hd movies on it, which costs the consumer way more to buy Blueray hd than to download it and stream through a computer with hd to tv, is way cheaper. Digital Baby, thats the only way! So whats the point. Blueray is yesterday....and for Nintendo..Wow did they screw up at E3. How long is all that mom and pop crap going to carry that system without real content, not long. That's why I stopped buying into Nintendo back in the 64 days. 1 or 2 good games a year is not enough. The X-Box 360's lineup is strong... I'm playing the hell out of COD4..but I have paid for or put on hold- Too Human, COD5, Gears of War 2, LOTR: Conquest, MK vs DC, SW-Force Unleashed and now FF13. Damn thats awesome...not including I still play my old games with friends on the backwards compatibility list...Halo rocks. Last year was a great yr. for gaming and this year is looking better, Next year better yet. This is what they say is," an exciting time."

Yeah more bang for your buck

Not only did you spend, what $500 to $600 alone, not including games and extra controllers for a system that doesn't play backwards compatible games but you paid that on a system that won't have that many good games on it for the next 5 yrs. either...So when they really learn to make good games on it, except MGS4, you'll need glasses and a walker and the technology will be different. X-Box having a slight edge over P3 is a huge understatement. I was in line for GTA4...O.K. and out of at least a 150 guys, only 1 guy was buying it on his P3, now if that's any indicator... How sad is that...
