I don't have a DX10 card knowing that there would be a DX10.1. Now there is DX11, I'll be waiting for it to come out. For now I'll buy another video(really cheap) and run SLI.

Cross platform APIs and libraries like OpenGl, SDL, ...are on the run. I just hope MS is making his API cross-platform because it would be a shame to loose ground to other cross-platform APIs especially looking at how far dx has gone...

I think what went wrong with Vista is that they tried to hit way too many price points. There was like 5 different versions of Vista... there was only ONE version of XP. Vista was/is an obvious ploy to rape you of money in order to get the 'good' features that make Vista look like a new OS (only the most expensive version came with graphical enhancements to the interface). I hope they lost a lot of money with Vista -- too much greed, not enough daring innovation; people need to FEEL like they're getting something new, especially at that premium price.

Vista WORKED, it just worked slow on even the most modern hardware -- that's what happens when you have 50 programs on startup by default. :-(

Only one version of XP ? XP home vs XP pro. Most people refuse to run home :). Two versions, not nearly as belligerent as 5, but still...

And you might be able to include WindowsXP FLP these days as well... although I'm unsure if it's seen light of day in a commercial atmosphere.

There were only 2 main versions of XP, home and pro. There were other varients, but really, who used MCE? It was home with a bunch of WMP plugins. And for anyone who really used their computer there was only one answer, and that was XP pro.

I think that his point though was that they were all (more or less) the same. They all had the same interface, they all had the same basic productivity level, but XP gave system builders and networkers a little more controll (though not much). All versions were more or lss the same. With vista there are huge and annoying differences and limitations. I think that is what he was pinting out.

Windows XP MCE was not home edition with media plugins, it was the pro edition with media plugins, otherwise you wouldn't be able to join domains after a few modifications.
and it officially launched with only two versions, Home and Pro, and the others were added later on.

the most expensive version of vista had everything from all versions combined, whereas the lowest one with a new GUI was the home premium, with only the home basic below it.

Caeden claims XP gives you 'control'. Apparently you have never used Windows 2000. Sure it's going on 9 years old, but what makes XP great is the WIN2K core. What makes XP suck... a lot... is everything Win2k Lacks (GUI scrolling changed for the worse.. less precise/accurate, themes, WGA, higher system requirements for these and other crap.. some of which claims to increase performance, instability issues, insecure, and that just about covers it). Then again... consumers using business class OS's is generally not a good idea... unless set-up by an administrator, and no... solely creating an admin account doesn't make you qualified. Comparison of business desktop OS's that do this: 2k Pro(treats you like an administrator), XP Pro(mangled, too much hand-holding, bloat, and extraneous features/'wizards' for users suffering from gross ignorance, AND lets newbies(users) run as administrator when such users shouldn't be.. and burying/hiding options that admin/power users NEED), Vista(not worth it, like OS X, read the XP rant, then again... to each their own, but an analogy: most people don't need scientific calculators(highly customizable OS), a simple one does just fine (one button mice, one area to resize windows, one application menu, oh, and more worthless features than worthwhile ones.. like atrocious drop shadows on windows, and a poorly designed finder (consistent hierarchal view.. please? this animation shit from going left to right.. or not at all and having to use a drop-down to go 'up'... WTF?! And the sliding panels that prompt you to Save/Exit/Cancel(among THE TONS of other uses these GUI nightwares are used for)... but cover the content... so you have to Cancel(instead of move a Window), then do it again! Even Linux has done this.), Explorer pretty much makes Finder obsolete, and Explorer is over a decade old), and certainly Windows NT(where all the 2K/XP goodness came from). I just need to stop... I could go on for a while longer.

MS Gaming Studios don't even write games for the PC anymore, so what's the point in DX11? MS abandoned the PC gaming market which is why I don't own a Windows PC anymore and OS X & Linux is ever gaining desktop share, good.

There has been some talk about making DX cross platform, not sure if they will ever do it, but i wouldn't be surprised to see it sometime in the future.

I think this is M$ way of trying to spearhead the NEW GPGPU movement ...as no one need DX anymore.
Thats why they are adding the Compute shader.

If windows 7 has less DRM but the same overhead, I see no other option than to sit hold out windows MeII until windows 7.

Except for the lack of dx10 windows XP serves me well.

m-soft is basing there windows 7 on vista, meaning it will be still taken from vista but adding dx 11 and a few other changes and tweaking the look and optimising the speed. VOILÀ windows 7

some sources say it will be taken from vista server as its more stable and applications friendly.

personally i think ms have run out of ideas or are plain greedy. I will be using my XP Pro as long as i can until there are clear benefits, features not available on XP pro. and most importantly when 3rd party applications/hardware start working.

I'm not a pro techy. However, my limited experience has taught me one thing; you are going to have to rip XP Pro from my cold dead fingers b4 I will look at Vista. Windows 7 will have to be even better than XP for me to consider that.

XP sucked until SP2, you had your diehard users chanting the mantra of "2k4lyfe". That changed... "xp4lyfe" is gonna change too.

Vista does everything XP does... just as well... If you can't make it do it... maybe its better that you stick to XP. All it takes it a bit of know-how... But, for the non tech savvy and those afraid of the unfamiliar that wants an out-of-the-box turnkey solution... XP might still be a better option.

As for Versions...
Vista Home - Worthless... do not buy
Home Premium - do you use XP-MCE? this one is just as good...
Business - Standard issue - THE only version worth having
Ultimate - Wanna ruin your perfectly good distro with MCE crap? go for it... Or in the unusual circumstance that you actually NEED bitlocker and can't get a copy of enterprise...
