Redmond (WA) – Sure the Nintendo Wii massively outsells the Xbox 360 every month, but a Microsoft director says the Wii isn’t a direct competitor. Aaron Greenberg, Microsoft’s director of product management for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, told Gamasutra that the Sony PlayStation 3 is the arch nemesis of the 360. He added that the 360 had more hard core hardware, something that gamers would graduate to from the Nintendo Wii.
In something that is sure to incense some Wii owners, Greenberg said the Nintendo console was more a novelty than a real gaming console, he even compared it to a karaoke machine that families bring out to entertain guests. “They’re not really buying for games, they’re just buying it as a novelty,” said Greenberg. According to NPD figures for the month of May, the Nintendo Wii outsold the Xbox 360 by a nearly four to one margin. The Wii sold 675,000 units while the 360 sold 186,000 units. Gamasutra will be publishing the entire interview in the future. Read more … Gamasutra
