eBay vote seller charged with a felony PDF Print E-mail

Minneapolis (MN) – A University of Minnesota student is getting some extra education in criminal justice after he tried to sell his presidential election vote on eBay.  Back in May, 19-year-old Max Sanders, a liberal arts student, offered to sell his vote to the highest bidder.  He even offered to provide photographic evidence of his vote by taking a picture of the ballot from inside the voting booth – a very important step since votes are technically anonymous.

But authorities got wind of his plot and have charged Sanders under an 1893 Minnesota state law that prohibits the sale and purchase of votes.  Sanders claims it was all a big joke, but prosecutors aren’t laughing.  He could face up to five years in prison and up to a $10000 fine.

The auction wasn’t even that popular and was pulled before Sanders received a single bid.
