Russian blogger sentenced for calling police “scum” PDF Print E-mail

Moscow (Russia) – A Russian blogger who called for the public burning of police officers has been given a suspended sentence for “inciting hatred or enmity”.  28-year-old musician Savva Terentiev wrote that his city’s police force should be cleaned up by publically burning officers in town square “twice a day”.  Russian courts sentence Terentiev to one year in prison, but suspended the sentence.

Despite Terentiev not needing to serve any prison time, his fellow bloggers are quite upset about the whole thing.  Many agree that the speech was a bit caustic, but they say bloggers should be able to write without the fear of persecution.

Can you imagine what would have happened to Terentiev if he had called Putin scum?
