The 1983 movie WarGames, starring Matthew Broderick as teenage computer enthusiast David Lightman, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and returns to 317 theaters for a special showing on July 24.

The movie paints a back then futuristic computer scenario when Lightman breaks into what he believes to be a computer containing a new video game, but accidentally starts a countdown to World War III. An artificial intelligence system called WOPR takes over the launch sequence of nuclear missiles aimed at the Soviet Union, but Lightman eventually succeeds in convincing the system that a global nuclear war is similar to a game of Tic-Tac-Toe and that there is no winning move.

MGM recently completed production of aWarGames sequel entitled WarGames: The Dead Code. The movie is set to premiere on DVD July 29 and features Matt Lanter as the computer hacker.
