Thats because every technical company has been outsourcing their business and screwing people in the US. Why should I waste my time on getting a degree when you're going to fire me for some mindless drone that has a degree but no sense to think on their own that you can pay peanuts to?

Companies are really feeling the pinch. India and China are consuming more and more of their IT talent internally, so I think that offshoring will soon run out of steam anyway. The other thing is that the weak dollar is driving up costs for offshoring.

However, it's true that there's just less and less good talent available in the US. The average age of an IT worker seems to me to be going up as the result of fewer and fewer coming in out of college. The ACM has been warning about this trend for several years now.

It just means that wages for tech jobs will go up :)

It seems that the people touting a shortage of technical workers have a vested interest in trying to create the image that tech workers are in short supply so that more people will enter that field and the wages will remain low.

I mean, c'mon, why should I work in technical field with that high requirements and commitment (and stressful job too) when I can get same job with same wages (even more) in art/cultures or economic field ?

If the wages is high enough, say, half of [insert your favorite actor/actress here] make in a year, it will attract the required persons to fulfill the positions

As someone about to begin school heading towards a Computer Science degree with a minor in business, this news couldn't make me happier :D

I am a south-asian (not indian).. and I graduated with EECS 2 years ago. Due to visa issues, I had to head back and guess what happened, no jobs for me. Because of my ethnicity, I can't find a job in other countries (simply, I can't enter or hold a valid work permit). And now I am enrolled to a post-grad.. still my future is blur.

Its nothing to do with whether its in west or east... the demand for tech people is not great as last time. And if you come to asia, you can see engineers are like 2nd class citizens.

This is the time of iPod, iPhone and gizmos... so what a teenagers want is to get on hold to a job where they can earn easily to get hold to those toys.. rather working hard long hours for nothing.

And this is true.. in my faculty.. enrolling numbers continually dropping.. and this is kinda threatening the survival of the faculty.

A little too late.

At least that's what my professor would say. Because if everyone else is like you, everyone would rush to take up degree in computer science, and by the time everyone graduated, you'll have too many graduates.

Best time to take up a course is when nobody else wants to take it (less competition when you graduated).

On the other hand, lacking man power is a bad bad thing. People complain there isn't enough job positions, economy bad, nobody's hiring, blah blah blah. Guess what? The company I work in is having a hard time hiring new technicians!

We need technicians to do on-site services, and we even offer larger pay than those who sits in a boring corner of a computer store, not to mention petrol allowance and everything.

Is it something about on-site service turning people off? I know I'm having a great time meeting people everywhere instead of stuck in the office...
